CFB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets: Tuesday, 10/14

Tuesday night’s Week 8 slate features three games for our CFB Best Bets. Let’s break down one of those as Western Kentucky hosts Florida International in a Conference USA showdown. The Hilltoppers are 10.5-point home favorites, but let’s look at the total in this one. Good luck with your CFB picks!

Florida International vs. Western Kentucky Prediction: Tuesday, October 14th

As noted above, Western Kentucky is a double-digit favorite at home for this Tuesday night C-USA matchup. The Hilltoppers should win and improve to 6-1 on the season and 4-0 in conference play. Let’s not worry about the spread, though.

This game should be on the higher-scoring side, with both offenses having key advantages. Let’s lock in the over and root for points of any kind, no matter who wins the game.

Western Kentucky is averaging 33.7 points per game (44th in FBS) while boasting one of the better Group of 5 offenses in the country. The Hilltoppers are especially strong through the air, ranking 14th nationally in passing yards per game (306.2). Led by strong quarterback play from Maverick McIvor, the WKU passing attack can set the tone at home tonight.

Meanwhile, Florida International has struggled to stop the pass this season. The Panthers are 129th in the country in passing yards allowed per game (274.4). They also rank 89th in EPA/Pass allowed and 85th in defensive success rate against the pass. It could be a long night for an FIU defense that’s also giving up 32.0 PPG (122nd in FBS).

On the other side, the Panthers can also move the ball in their own matchup. Western Kentucky ranks 104th nationally in total yards allowed per game, with the 124th-ranked rush defense. WKU has notable issues with tackling and limiting explosive plays, especially against the run.

As for FIU, it can lean on the run game with senior RB Kejon Owens. His 6.1 yards per carry anchors a rushing offense that ranks 49th nationally in yards per game. The Pirates can string together drives via the run with Owens leading the way.

CFB Picks, Predictions & Best Bets: Wednesday, 10/15

Let’s now turn our attention to Wednesday night’s slate for our CFB best bets. Sam Houston hosts UTEP in this Conference USA matchup. The combined record of these teams is 1-11 on the year. Well, someone has to win this week, but let’s just worry about the over/under.

UTEP vs. Sam Houston Prediction: Wednesday, October 15th

Who else is ready for an exciting matchup between these C-USA bottom-feeders?! Just us, huh. You may not watch, but we can still find a betting angle on this game. There’s some clear value on the under with two bad offenses meeting up.

Sam Houston is averaging just 17.0 points per game (127th in FBS) while ranking 131st in total offense. The Bearkats also come in at 129th nationally in offensive EPA/Play and 115th in success rate offensively. They’re struggling to both run and pass the ball right now.

As for UTEP, it’s not much better offensively. The Miners are averaging 18.7 PPG (120th in FBS) and rank 118th nationally in total yards per contest. The offense is also just 133rd in EPA/Play and 134th in success rate. Those are some ugly advanced metrics that tell us UTEP might even be worse offensively than winless Sam Houston.

Considering we have two of college football’s worst offenses in action here, the under is an easy play. Plus, the UTEP defense is actually respectable. The Miners are 58th in the country in total defense, 32nd in defensive EPA/Play, and 25th in defensive success rate.

It’s hard to see Sam Houston scoring much in this matchup. UTEP has also been held to 17 points or fewer in 5 of 6 games this year. With a solid defense and terrible offense, the Miners are also 4-2 to the under this season. The total seems too high, so we won’t think twice about the under.
