2026 March Madness South Region Bracket Breakdown: Picks & Predictions
Everything is bigger in Texas, including the stakes at the Toyota Center for the 2026 NCAA Tournament South Regional. This year's 2026 March Madness South Region bracket is a gauntlet of physical play and coaching clinics, making it the toughest region to predict. From the "Group of Death" in the middle seeds to the heavy favorites at the top, we break down the Advanced Analytics (KenPom/NET) and key injury reports that will decide who survives the Houston heat to reach the Final Four.
Florida Gators: Can the Defending Champions Repeat?
Florida (26-7) enters the 2026 NCAA Tournament as the defending national champions and the No. 1 seed in the South Region. The Gators secured their top seed despite a semifinal loss in the SEC Tournament: a testament to their body of work throughout the season. Florida's national title odds sit at +650 at BetMGM Sportsbook, making them the fourth-best bet to cut down the nets and repeat.
The Gators open against the winner of the First Four matchup between No. 16 seeds Prairie View A&M and Lehigh. Florida's first-round game should be straightforward, but the repeat road is legitimately difficult. That's especially the case if the Gators have to face Houston in a de facto Elite Eight road matchup played in Houston.
Houston Cougars: A Potential Home-Court Advantage in the Elite Eight
Here is the most fascinating storyline in the South Region: if chalk prevails, Florida would face No. 2 seed Houston (28-6) in the Elite Eight, in Houston. The Cougars earned the second seed with one of the nation's top defenses, a staple under head coach Kelvin Sampson. Potentially playing what amounts to a home game in the regional final gives them an enormous edge.
Houston opens against No. 15 seed Idaho (21-14) and should cruise to the Sweet 16. Once there, the Cougars become the story of the South Region. Bracket builders who pick upsets should strongly consider looking elsewhere and pick Houston to make the Final Four, or at least the Elite Eight. Sampson has led the Cougs to a Sweet 16 appearance or better in 6 straight NCAA Tournaments.Â
Illinois Fighting Illini: The No. 3 Seed With Elite Eight Potential
Illinois (24-8) earned the No. 3 seed in the South and opens against No. 14 seed Penn (18-11). The Illini boast the 2nd-best offensive efficiency in the country, per KenPom, and are led by stud freshman Keaton Wagler. They have size at every position, experience across the roster, and are well-coached by Brad Underwood. Illinois is built for March: physical, disciplined, and capable of defending multiple styles of play.
A potential Sweet 16 matchup between Illinois and Houston would be must-see basketball. The only concern for the Illini, though, is their past failures in the NCAA Tournament. Underwood hasn't led his team past the second round in 4 of the past 5 March Madness appearances. In 2024, though, Illinois reached the Elite Eight. That could happen again with this year's squad.Â
Nebraska Cornhuskers: No. 4 Seed and Legitimate Sleeper
Nebraska (26-6) is having one of the best seasons in program history and enters as the No. 4 seed in the South. The Cornhuskers open against No. 13 seed Troy (22-11) in the first round. They own a top-10 defense in the country, per KenPom, and veteran leadership and contribution across the lineup. That makes them a legitimate threat to advance to the Sweet 16 and beyond.Â
Notably, Nebraska has infamously never won an NCAA Tournament game in its program history. That likely changes this year with an easy first-round matchup against Troy. Still, it's something to keep in mind as the past March Madness experience simply isn't there for the Cornhuskers. For bracket players looking for a team outside the consensus top picks, Nebraska at the No. 4 line in the South offers real value.
Vanderbilt Commodores: Upset Watch for the No. 5 Seed?
Vanderbilt (26-8) enters as one of the more underrated teams in the field. The Commodores earned a No. 5 seed, despite ranking 12th in the country at KenPom and 13th in the NET. They have a top-10 offense in the sport, led by one of the best backcourt combos of Duke Miles and Tyler Tanner.Â
Vanderbilt opens against No. 12 seed McNeese (28-5), a mid-major with a strong enough resume that an upset isn't out of the question. This is McNeese's third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, and it pulled off a first-round upset over Clemson just a year ago. Still, Vanderbilt's offense should help it survive and advance. If the Commodores handle business in Round 1, they become a strong pick to reach the Sweet 16.
VCU Rams: One of the Best Upset Picks in the South
VCU (27-7) earned a No. 11 seed in the South and could be among the more dangerous double-digit seeds in the entire bracket. The Rams open against No. 6 seed North Carolina (24-8), a Tar Heels team that enters without star Caleb Wilson after he suffered a season-ending injury.Â
VCU's pressure defense, experienced roster, and dangerous three-point shooting make it a genuine threat to knock off UNC in Round 1. The Rams could even bust brackets further with a second-round victory over Illinois in a potential matchup. Don't sleep on VCU making some noise in the South.Â
South Region Upset Picks and Bracket Strategy
Safe pick: Houston reaching the Elite Eight. Their tournament experience, suffocating defense, and potential home-crowd advantage are too compelling to ignore.
Best first-round upset: VCU over No. 6 North Carolina. The Tar Heels are undermanned and ripe for the picking without Wilson.
Cinderella candidate: No. 12 McNeese. The Cowboys are live to upset Vanderbilt in the first round and maybe take down Nebraska after that as well.Â
Bold Final Four call: Houston over Florida in the Elite Eight. Chalk this one in pencil.

South Region Final Four Prediction
Pick to advance to Indianapolis: Houston. The Cougars are built for this moment, and the prospect of playing the Elite Eight in their home city is too significant an advantage to overlook. Florida is the safe chalk pick as the reigning champs, but Houston represents the single best value bet to reach the Final Four from the South Region.
