A lot can happen in fantasy baseball over a weekend.  While mostly everyone in the United States was celebrating America’s birthday with barbecues and fireworks, fantasy baseball owners have been sent into panic mode after some devastating injuries wreaked havoc on their rosters.  So without further adieu, here is the next installment of the walking wounded.

Miguel Cabrera (1B-DET)

There are few players who are more valuable to their MLB teams and fantasy rosters than Miguel Cabrera.  The news could hardly be worse that Cabrera sustained a Grade 3 strain of his left calf which will keep him out until late August.  This is a catastrophic blow to fantasy GMs who will be without their elite first baseman for most of the second half of the season.  You should not stand idly by because his production cannot be replaced by anyone on the waiver wire.  Now is the time to aggressively seek a trade, but be cautious of other owners trying to take advantage of your desperation.

Adrian Gonzalez (1B-LAD)

Fantasy owners have loved what they have seen from Mets’ prospect Steven Matz except for those owners who also have Adrian Gonzalez on their roster.  Gonzalez was hit by a Matz pitch on his right hand which caused a contusion and forced him out of Sunday’s game.  Right now it does not look like he will miss any time, but you will need to check back for a status update on Monday.  Gonzalez has been a solid source of power, run production and batting average all season so any time he may miss will be costly.

Carlos Gomez (OF-MIL)

Gomez has been a major disappointment for fantasy owners who spent an early first round pick on him.  He has battled a variety of injuries all year and was removed from Saturday’s game after being hit by a pitch on his wrist.  X-rays came back negative so he is considered day-to-day.  Monitor his status early in Week 14 to see if he is going to miss a day or two, but expect him to be in the lineup sooner than later.

Starling Marte (OF-PIT)

Marte was taken out of Sunday’s game against Cleveland with pain in his side.  The Pirates will re-evaluate him on Monday but the initial thought is that he suffered an oblique injury.  Check back in on Monday for a further update, but be prepared to put him on your DL if it is indeed an oblique injury which typically requires several weeks to recover from.

Stephen Strasburg (SP-WAS)

Here we go again with Strasburg.  After returning from a trapezius injury a few weeks ago, Strasburg has ended up back on the disabled list with an oblique strain.  This will likely cost him at least several weeks because oblique strains require significant time to heal.  Look for Tanner Roark to remain in the Nationals’ rotation for the foreseeable future and stash Strasburg on your DL until the next time he gets injured.

Josh Hamilton (OF-TEX)

Fantasy disaster Josh Hamilton is once again sidelined with another injury.  After recently returning from a hamstring issue, Hamilton is now dealing with a groin injury which will keep him sidelined for a few days.  The Rangers don’t seem to think he will require another stint on the disabled list, but at this point it really doesn’t matter because Hamilton cannot be trusted on any level to contribute to your fantasy team.

Ben Revere (OF-PHI)

Phillies outfielder Ben Revere has been limited in playing time this past week due to a slight hamstring injury.  This is problematic for a player who is known for his base stealing and speed.  The Phillies have not been shy about their attempts to trade him, but this injury will likely turn potential suitors off.  Check back early in the week for an update on his status but have an alternative ready to go if Revere is not.

Steven Souza (OF-TB)

Souza was hit by a pitch on his hand on Sunday which required stitches due to a laceration.  X-rays came back negative which is a good sign, but apparently he will be seeing a hand specialist on Monday due to the loss of some feeling in his pinkie finger.  Expect him to miss a few days at best and a DL stint could be in order depending on the results of his consultation.
