Week 5 of the fantasy baseball season is now in the books.  Your roster has likely been inflicted with an injury or two (or more), so your position in the standings likely reflects how well you have handled that adversity.  So without further adieu, here is the next installment of the walking wounded.

David Price (SP-DET)

Tigers’ ace David Price sustained a fluke hamstring injury when he tripped over a bat during his last start.  It did not look good for him initially but Price has progressed nicely and will make his next start despite being pushed back a couple days.  Fantasy GM’s avoided a catastrophe for now, so plan on having him in your lineup next week.

Alex Cobb (SP-TB)

In what should come as a surprise to no one, Alex Cobb is set to undergo Tommy John surgery and will be gone until late 2016.  He was shut down in spring training with a forearm issue which is usually a precursor to needing the infamous operation.  Cobb did attempt to come back, but he was diagnosed with a complete tear of his UCL.  The timing is even worse because he will miss almost all of next year as well.  He can be dropped in all league formats.

David Wright (3B-NYM)

Wright has been out for several weeks with a hamstring injury but suffered from some back pain during his recent rehab assignment.  He was shut down for a week and will look to resume baseball activities at that time.  This has become the norm for Wright given his injury history over the past few years.  It will be at least a couple weeks before you can expect him to be back if everything goes well.

Drew Smyly (SP-TB)

Continuing the unfortunate trend for Tampa Bay starters is the demise of Drew Smyly.  He will likely need season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum.  Smyly only made three starts this season and did pitch well, but now it appears he is lost for the season.  There will likely be official confirmation of his status by early this week, but you should be prepared to drop him in all redraft leagues.

Matt Carpenter (3B-STL)

Carpenter missed this past weekend’s games due to fatigue and underwent several tests to rule out any cardiovascular issues.  The Cardinals have indicated that Carpenter does not have any serious issues and they expect him back in the lineup on Tuesday.  He is an unconventional fantasy third baseman in the value he provides without supplying any power at all.

Yonder Alonso (1B-SD)

Alonso has never hit for much power, but he has been a solid source for batting average thus far.  He sustained a bone bruise in his right shoulder and has been placed on the disabled list.  He could be out for more than a couple weeks depending on how quickly he heals.

Jason Grilli (RP-ATL)

Grilli has been respectable as the Braves’ closer after they traded Craig Kimbrel, but he is now suffering from back spasms and will not be available for a few days.  It does not look like he will require a stint on the DL just yet, but it would not be surprising if that is where he ends up.  Look for Jim Johnson to assume closing duties in Grilli’s absence.

Dillon Gee (SP-NYM)

The Mets’ fifth starter was the subject of trade rumors all winter but was put back in the rotation after Zack Wheeler went down with Tommy John surgery.  Gee is not much of a fantasy option, but his absence has opened the door for top prospect Noah Syndergaard to make his big league debut on Tuesday against the Cubs.  Syndergaard is certainly worth a waiver wire acquisition if he is still available for some reason.
