The MLB trade has come and gone and we have now turned the calendar to August.   Many fantasy leagues have their own trade deadlines fast approaching so your window to make a move is quickly closing.  Injuries continue to ravage rosters with frequency which is nothing new at this point.  So without further adieu, here is the next installment of the walking wounded.

Jason Kipnis (2B-CLE)

It is possible that the Indians place Jason Kipnis on the disabled list after he was held out of the lineup on Sunday.  Kipnis has been dealing with a shoulder injury which has limited him to being a DH lately.  He underwent an MRI but we do not know the results as of yet.  Fantasy owners should begin preparing for an extended absence and seek alternatives to replace Kipnis’s high batting average and runs scored.

Kris Bryant (3B-CHC)

Rookie Kris Bryant was injured when he slid headfirst into second base on Sunday and was taken out of the game.  He went through the concussion protocol and everything came back fine.  Bryant is considered day-to-day but will likely be given a day or two off as the Cubs should be understandably cautious with their cornerstone third baseman.

A.J. Pollock (OF-ARZ)

Pollock left Friday’s game with a hamstring injury and was held out of the lineup all weekend as a precaution.  Pollock has been dynamic this year batting .305 with 11 home runs, 45 RBI, 67 runs scored and 23 stolen bases.  He is a must-start in all fantasy leagues but you should check back on Monday for a status update in case he is not ready to go.  Right now consider Pollock day-to-day but be wary of hamstring injuries which can linger or re-occur with frequency.

Matt Holliday (OF-STL)

Holliday re-injured his quadriceps and was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain which has landed him on the DL again.  The Cardinals seem optimistic that he will play again before the end of the season, but that does not help fantasy owners.  Holliday only has four home runs and 31 RBI this year so his absence from your lineup is not as impactful as it would have been in years past.

Corey Dickerson (OF-COL)

It is not surprising that Dickerson has landed back on the disabled list.  However, this time it is not because of his plantar fasciitis.  Dickerson sustained two rib fractures after diving for a ball last Thursday and has been put on the DL for the third time this year.  He will likely be out several weeks so you should not count on much from him the rest of the way.

A.J. Burnett (SP-PIT)

This could be the end of A.J. Burnett’s career as he has landed on the disabled list after experiencing elbow pain over his past few starts.  Burnett had planned to retire at the end of the season so it does not appear that surgery is an option.  He had been one of the better National League starters until his last three starts when it all began falling apart.  Feel free to drop him and clear a roster spot.

Justin Turner (3B-LAD)

Turner has become a valuable fantasy player batting .323 with 13 home runs and 44 RBI.  He was likely just waiver wire scraps and turned into a stud proving that regular playing time in a deep lineup is a recipe for success.  He is dealing with a skin infection and was placed on the DL retroactive to July 28.  Keep him rostered because third base is such a shallow position but watch out for a drop-off in his performance with the extended absence.

C.J. Wilson (SP-LAA)

Wilson is scheduled to undergo surgery on his elbow as he has been dealing with bone spurs for quite some time.  An MRI did not reveal positive results and now Wilson’s season is over.  He can be dropped in all redraft leagues but should be ready to go for 2016.

Michael Pineda (SP-NYY)

Pineda could not make it through an entire season without getting injured.  He was placed on the DL with discomfort in his forearm and will likely miss up to a month.   It has been all or nothing for Pineda who has had some incredibly dominant starts while other times appearing to be nothing more than a middle of the road pedestrian pitcher.  Stash him on your DL because he could be a difference-maker in September.

Devon Travis (2B-TOR)

The Blue Jays now have one of the scariest lineups in baseball but will be without rookie Devon Travis again after he re-injured his shoulder and was placed on the disabled list.  Travis got off to a great start in April but slowed down quite a bit and is now on the DL for the second time.  Despite still hitting over .300 he is proving to be untrustworthy so look for alternatives as we head down the stretch.
