PGA DFS Coverage for the Sony Open
The PGA Tour travels 74 miles across the Hawaiian islands from Kapalua to Wai’alae Country Club. We will see 19 of the 39 golfers that played at the Sentry compete at the Sony Open this weekend. Defending champion Hideki Matsuyama looks to be the first player to go back to back since Jimmy Walker in 2014-2015. This is the first full-field event of the 2023 calendar year.
The Field: Sony Open
We’ve got a full field of top players participating this weekend in Hawaii. Jordan Spieth leads this field ranking 14th in the world coming off of a top-15 finish at the Sentry. Hideki Matsuyama looks to make it two in a row after his forced a playoff against Russell Henley. He overcame a nine-stroke deficit to take home the title. Champion of the ZOZO Keegan Bradley comes into this event ranking second in FedEx Cup points. Former number one amateur in the world Cole Hammer earned a spot this weekend after his Top-10 finish at the RSM Classic. A few other notables in the field are Tom Kim, Adam, Scott, Billy Horschel, Corey Conners and Christiaan Bezuidenhout.
The Courses: Wai’alae Country Club
Wai’alae Country Club plays host to the Sony Open, which is just an island hop from Maui over to Oahu. This course is consistently ranked as one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour schedule. It is only 7,044 yards but plays as a Par-70. It features very tight fairways, average size greens and bermuda grass. There will be plenty of obstacles for these players from palm trees to tropical vegetation all over the course. Once again. the wind is the biggest defense on this course.
The Weather: Honolulu, Hawaii
The tournament moves from Kapalua to Honolulu on the islands of Hawaii. We should see typical fantastic weather with temperatures in the high 70s. The only thing that matters for this weekend and this event is the wind. The current forecast is calling for winds between 8-to-12 mph throughout the weekend. If the winds do stay in that range, those are more than manageable for these pros. This event has a cut and these players will have to go low in these conditions. The last two winners have finished at 20 under par or better.
How To Watch the Sony Open
You will get some prime time golf this weekend. The tournament is being played in Hawaii which means we have to deal with time zones. You will see coverage on Thursday and Friday from 7-10:30pm ET on the Golf Channel.
