Victor Wembanyama 2023 NBA Draft Profile

If you’re an NBA fan, you’ve likely heard about Victor Wembanyama since at least last summer. Standing at 7-foot-5 and just 19 years old, the French center is viewed as arguably the top NBA prospect since LeBron James and even better than Anthony Davis and Zion Williamson. At his height and with a wingspan at nearly 8 feet, Wembanyama will be one of the tallest centers in the NBA right away as a rookie. Some taller NBA centers are too lanky to last, but Wemby weighs in at over 230 pounds and is very fluid as a shooter, scorer, and ball-handler. He also just anchored his Metropolitans 92 team to the French League finals.

Of course, with his elite length and size, Wembanyama is one of the best shot blockers to enter the NBA in some time. The ability to defend the rim and lock down the paint defensively should make him a true two-way NBA star. His shot-blocking threat makes him a plus-defender overall, despite not having the true quickness to stay with smaller ball-handers. Wemby is also a natural rebounder with his height and arm length while gobbling up missed shots on both ends.

On the offensive end, Wembanyama is an impressive shot creator and dynamic scorer for someone with his size. He has a fantastic pull-up jumper shot in the mid-range but can also step back and drain from three-point range. Wemby’s ball-handling and use of the dribble to create open shots for himself is something we rarely see from a center, especially one who’s 7-foot-5. He’s also an elite finisher around the rim, whether it’s on put-backs, lobs, or from his own drives with the ball. Think Giannis Antetokounmpo but with better touch as a shooter and ball-handler – and a few inches taller.

When looking at potential weaknesses for Wemby, yes, there are a couple. First, his offensive game can be a bit inconsistent at times. Sometimes his shot isn’t totally there, and other times it’s his passing that is still raw. He can refine the offensive playmaking skillset as a rookie and over the next few seasons to fully develop into a true superstar, though. Another small weakness is his slight frame right now as a teenager. The Spurs would likely prefer him to bulk up the upper body to match the physicality of some thicker-bodied bigs in the NBA. We saw this with Anthony Davis, who was very lanky coming out of college but eventually tacked on muscle to become a dominant NBA center.
