EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix NASCAR Playbook
Published: Mar 27, 2022
Circuit of the Americas is one of the best road races in the world and it’s the host for NASCAR this weekend. The EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix is the first road race of the year and the sixth different racing style of the Cup schedule. If you haven’t checked out the Track Breakdown this week, there’s a track layout and a lot of strategy talk mentioned as well. Don’t worry though, we’ll have more strategy talk here in a minute as well.
Strategy Notes
While this is the second year in a row that the Cup series has raced at the Austin Texas, last year’s doesn’t really count. Why’s that? Well, it torrentially rained much of the weekend and the race was absolute chaos. Just ask Kurt Busch, Cole Custer, and MTJ. So we can’t really use the track history last year for what we’ll see this year, not to mention the cars completely changed. We can however use a few of the road races from last year like Sonoma, Watkins Glen, Road America, and the Charlotte Roval. One other thing to pay attention to is that recent momentum and speed has been a better predictor of road race finishes than road race history typically is. That means we might find some drivers in the GPP category compared to cash when we weren’t expecting it. Laps led don’t much matter as a focus this week as there are likely only 55 Green Flag laps run between cautions and stage breaks. Finish position and position differential are going to be the bulk of the points and getting the most drivers finishing in the top-10 is the key to winning the contest.
Average Scores By Starting Spot
These charts show the average DFS scores by starting spot over the last five road races regardless of the driver in those spots. It’s meant as a strategy guide and not to be taken as a hard-and-fast rule for drivers scoring that well again.
