2023 Player Outlook
In his first full season back since undergoing Tommy John surgery Severino was able to make 19 starts, pitching 102 innings while posting a 3.18 ERA and 1.000 WHIP. Unfortunately, he spent almost two months on the IL due to a right lat strain. The fact that Severino’s fastball velocity (96.3) was close to pre-TJ surgery levels and that his slider produced a 41.6 Whiff % is encouraging, but his continued health issues not related to his surgery remain a concern. He has plenty of potential upside, but whether or not you invest heavy draft capital in Severino this preseason will likely depend on your risk tolerance and belief that he can remain healthy.
