San Diego Padres @ New York Mets

Total: 6.5

Moneyline: NYJ -146

The only series left going is Mets and Padres as all the other MLB Wild Card series ended in two-game sweeps. Chris Bassitt battles Joe Musgrove to see who can advance into the divisional series.

Captain/MVP

Chris Bassitt, NYM

When you look at Chris Bassitt’s numbers this year, he clearly enjoyed pitching in New York more than he did on the road. Bassitt pitched to a 2.95 ERA at home compared to a 4.00 ERA on the road. It is worth noting, however, that he did not pitch well against San Diego this year, allwing 9 ER in 10.1 IP, but he struck out 17. His one start against San Diego at home? 7 IP, 2 ER, & 11 Ks. With the lack of expected scoring, give me Bassitt in the captain's chair.

Joe Musgrove, SD

As much as I like Bassitt, I like Joe Musgrove too. Anytime you see a game total as low as 6.5, you have to consider the fact that pitchers are going to dominate this game. Musgrove finished the season quite well, allowing just 1 ER over his final four starts combined, three of those four obviously ending in shutouts.

Francisco Lindor, NYM

If you want to go the offensive route, look no further than Francisco Lindor. Lindor has owned Jose Musgrove throughout their careers notching a BvP of  6-for-17 (.353 AVG) with 2 HR and 3 RBI. Over Lindor’s last four games, he has 2 HR, 5 RBI, and a SB.

Utility

Juan Soto, SD

If there’s anything that Chris Bassitt struggles with at times, it’s left-handed bats. There’s no lefties quite like Soto on the Padres, much less the league. Despite a subpar season from the outside looking in, Soto ended the year with a .405 wOBA vs. right-handed pitching this year.

Pete Alonso, NYM

Few guys on the planet possess the power Pete Alonso does and he flashed some of that on Saturday belting 42nd home run this year between the regular season and postseason. Alonso has hits in six straight games and hits in 10-of-11 overall.

Starling Marte, NYM

If Marte reaches base, he’s going. He’s swiped two bags in Game 1 of this series and with right-handed hurler Joe Musgrove on the hill, Marte has a real opportunity. Marte hit .287 with a .342 wOBA vs. RHP this year. 14 of his 18 SB in the regular season came vs. RHP.

Jeff McNeil, NYM

How do we not include the NL batting title champ here? McNeil has had a hit in each of the first two games of this series after finishing the regular season batting .326. He had an RBI double in Game 2 and has hit .332 vs. RHP this season.

Mark Canha, NYM

You know who I like here? Mark Canha. You’ll need cheap exposure if you want use a pitcher at the captain spot, and Canha has hit righties well all season long. Canha has a .280 AVG and a .348 wOBA against right-handed pitching this season.

Jurickson Profar, SD

The Padres exploded in Game 1 against Max Scherzer and was shut down against Jacob deGrom in Game 2. Profar is leading off again in Game 3 and this year out of the leadoff hole, Profar had a .745 OPS and .328 wOBA. Both very respectable numbers.

Trent Grisham, SD

So who would’ve pegged Trent Grisham as the one guy in this series to have homered in each of the first two games of this series? This is the type of production the Padres were hoping they’d get from all year. They need him to do again in this elimination game and Chris Bassitt does, at times, struggle against lefties swingers.
