There is one final week before the All-Star break and that means there can be funky schedules and a lot of interleague games. This is a great way to get set up for the week ahead and see what this week’s match-up look like from a stats perspective. As always, the match-up breakdown section will be updated Thursday morning for the weekend series.

DJ LeMahieu , 3B NYY – LeMahieu has been unbelievable this week no matter where the Yankees were playing. He slashed .682/.708/1.318 in 24 plate appearances, before going 3-for-6 on Sunday. That bring his counting stats to three homers, 13 RBI, and 10 runs through Sunday’s action. He’s been hitting well for a while now but this week is just straight out of a video game. For those that were questioning whether he can hit outside of Coors, he’s certainly putting those questions to bed at this point.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. , 2B/OF TOR – Holy homers Batman! Gurriel is not endanger of getting sent back to the minors again at this point. In the last six games, he hit .500/.519/1.154 with five homers and eight runs and RBI each. How good was his last week? LeMahieu leads the majors in five of the six categories above but not in ISO, that’s Gurriel.

Dominic Smith , OF NYM – Smith has a teammate that’s been hitting bombs all year, but this week it was Smith’s week to take a bit of thunder. He slashed .346/.393/.846 with four homers, seven runs, four RBI and a steal in the last seven games and 28 PA. They have transitioned him to the outfield to get his bat in the lineup more consistently and that has paid off for Smith. Right now the Mets need all the bright spots they can muster as they wind down the first half.

Fernando Tatis Jr. , SS SD – Tatis was busy filling up every category of the stat line last week with a .474/.600/1.000 slash line, three home runs, 10 runs, seven RBI, and three steals. San Diego’s offense is starting to get rolling in certain match-ups and Tatis’ role in that can’t be exaggerated. This type of week isn’t shocking as he is a former top prospect with this kind of upside forecast for him. As the Padres offense continues to meld together more weeks like this should be expected from Tatis.

Who’s Not

Christian Yelich , OF MIL – He is human. Wow! A .130/.231/.174 slash line with two runs, an RBI, and a steal is all he could muster last week. That’s a far cry from the crazy pace he’s been on in defense of his NL MVP crown from a year ago but hey he couldn’t hit that way all year right? The All-Star break might be coming at the perfect time for Yelich and the Brew Crew as their offense as a whole has slowed a bit over the last couple of weeks.

Jorge Soler , DH KC – It’s been a bit of a rebound season for Soler in Kansas City as the Royals continue their rebuilding process but this week, it hasn’t been good for Soler. He slashed .043/.120/.043 with no counting stats and a monstrous 48-percent K-rate in 25 plate appearances. It’s not like he’s been tearing the cover off the ball like the other two guys in this category, but that’s still a terrible week for anybody especially with the lack of counting stats of any kind.

Gary Sánchez , C NYY – So despite the Yankees offense putting up 29 runs in two games in London, Sanchez went just 1-for-11 and that added to his .143/.217/.143 slash line with just one run scored before Sunday action. For a guy who has been carrying the Yankees offense for a big chunk of the season, Sanchez may be relaxing a bit since some help has arrived and D.J. LeMahieu has stepped up recently. Right now its just one bad week, but hopefully it doesn’t transition to a slump across the All-Star break.
