In Case You Missed It

Following four appearances out of the Blue Jays’ bullpen this month, Thomas Pannone was absolutely brilliant in his first career MLB start Wednesday afternoon. The 24-year-old lefty, who is ranked as the organization’s No. 27 prospect by MLB.com, no-hit the Orioles through 6.0 frames and finished his day after allowing only one hit and two walks while striking out three over 7.0 shutout innings.

Pannone was not the only young hurler to turn in a terrific performance Wednesday afternoon, as Freddy Peralta dominated the Reds in Milwaukee en route to a 4-0 victory for the Brewers. The 22-year-old righty needed only 95 pitches (64 strikes) to get through 7.0 scoreless innings, as he gave up just three hits and two walks while punching out seven. Make it two solid efforts in a row for Peralta after he labored through a terrible outing in Atlanta back on August 10.

In support of Peralta, the dynamic duo of Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain went a combined 7-for-9 with three RBI and a run scored. Yelich was particularly impressive, going 4-for-4 while coming up just a triple short of the cycle. The All-Star outfielder has now gone 13-for-40 with three homers during his current nine-game hitting streak.

Carlos Rodon registered his eighth straight quality start Wednesday, as he held the Twins to two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five across 6.0 frames. Over the course of that run, Rodon has gone 4-0 with an outstanding 1.75 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 47-to-23 K/BB ratio in 56.2 innings.

After exiting early in Tuesday’s win over the Marlins, Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman has been placed on the 10-day DL due to left-knee tendinitis. The trio of David Robertson , Zach Britton , and Dellin Betances all have the potential to see save opportunities in Chapman’s absence.

The Cubs placed shortstop Addison Russell (finger) on the 10-day DL retroactive to this past Monday, opening up a roster spot for newly-acquired veteran Daniel Murphy . Murphy got the start at his familiar second base in his debut with the Cubs on Wednesday, but the three-time All-Star lined up in the leadoff spot for just the 13th time in his career, going 2-for-5 with a pair of singles, one RBI and one run scored in an 8-2 win over the Tigers.

In a similar situation to their division rivals, the Cardinals placed Marcell Ozuna on the 10-day DL with shoulder inflammation Wednesday afternoon and added newly-acquired Matt Adams , who has played 486 of his 680 career MLB, regular-season games donning a Cards uniform, to the active roster. Adams did not appear in Wednesday’s 3-1 win against the Dodgers.

Despite a 10-4 loss in Boston on Wednesday night, Edwin Encarnación ’s return from an 11-day stint on the DL was a big one, as the veteran slugger went 2-for-4 with a couple of two-run deep drives.

In his first start since July 20, and only his second since June 8, Stephen Strasburg (neck) lasted 4.0 innings in the Nationals 8-7 come-from-behind win over the Phillies. Strasburg fired 84 pitches (51 strikes) while allowing five earned runs on seven hits and one walk alongside five strikeouts.

Drafting Made Easy: The Ultimate Cheat Sheet

Thursday on the Hill

Jacob deGrom will continue his chase of the N.L. Cy Young Award, as the Mets wrap up a four-game series with the Giants at CIti Field on Thursday afternoon. Last time out back on August 18, deGrom was superb in his only complete-game of the season so far, surrendering zero earned runs (one unearned) on seven hits and no walks while striking out nine at Philadelphia. The Mets ace currently boasts MLB’s best ERA at a ridiculous 1.71. He will be opposed by Madison Bumgarner in an intriguing duel.

Trevor Cahill has been nothing short of amazing for the A’s when pitching in Oakland this season, as he sports an incredible 0.85 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 9.7 K/9 over eight home starts. On the road, however, the 30-year-old right-hander has not even been close to the same guy. In 34.0 innings away from Oakland, Cahill has struggled to a 6.62 ERA. He’ll be on the mound in Minnesota opposite rookie Kohl Stewart on Thursday evening.
