2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: Payamps had his best season in the bigs last year with Milwaukee, posting a 2.55 ERA (3.48 FIP) with an 81.1 percent strand rate, 27 holds, and three saves. The righty enjoyed a massive spike in his strikeout rate, as last year's 26.8 percent was over nine percentage points higher than his strikeout rate between 2019-2022 (17.7%). So, what happened? Career bests in his swinging strike rate (10.8%) and contact rate (74.8%) certainly helped, but a shift in his pitch mix has a lot to do with it. He threw his slider more than ever before, and that also allowed his fastball to be more effective (38.3% whiff rate).

2024 Outlook: That shift in pitch mix should carry into 2024, and he'll be the team's primary setup man in front of Devin Williams. Payamps would see save opportunities if something were to happen to Williams, but in SV+H leagues, Payamps is a fine target in the later rounds, especially if he continues to limit hard contact and can maintain the strikeout rate from last season.
