George A. King of the New York Post reports that the Angels have shown early interest in upcoming free agent Didi Gregorius.

Andrelton Simmons is also a free agent, and assuming that the Angels aren't able to bring him back, there's certainly a need to add a shortstop. Gregorius has also been mentioned as a potential target of the Yankees -- as King points out -- with discussions that the Yankees might want to move Gleyber Torres back to second base even if they're able to bring back DJ LeMahieu. The 30-year-old hit .284/.339/.488 with 10 homers and 40 RBI while playing in all 60 games for the Phillies.

Matt Strahm will undergo surgery to repair a partially torn patellar tendon in his right knee.

Strahm, 28, is expected to be ready for the start of spring training. The left-hander was dealing with knee issues all season and spent time on the injured list, but avoided an operation to keep throwing in 2020. He's had the surgery before, but on his left knee in 2017. In 19 games this summer, Strahm registered a 2.61 ERA and 19/4 K/BB ratio over 20 2/3 innings.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he's considering starting Austin Barnes at catcher in Game 3 of the World Series on Friday against the Rays.

Barnes drew the start at catcher in the Dodgers' World Series Game 1 victory on Tuesday, though he did finish 0-for-4 with two strikeouts at the plate. If he does catch Walker Buehler in Game 3 on Friday, that would make Will Smith the designated hitter. A.J. Pollock served as the DH in Wednesday night's Game 2 loss.

Matt Magill has elected to become a free agent.

Magill earned five saves in 22 total appearances with the Mariners in 2019 before struggling to a 6.10 ERA over 10 1/3 innings of relief in 2020. The 30-year-old required an arthroscopic debridement surgery on his right shoulder in mid-September and was outrighted off the Mariners' 40-man roster earlier this week.

Carl Edwards Jr. has elected to become a free agent.

Edwards got pushed off the Mariners' 40-man roster and will now look to latch on with a new team over the offseason. The 29-year-old former top Cubs prospect was limited to 4 2/3 innings of relief this summer with Seattle because of a right forearm strain that popped up in early August and affected him the rest of the way. He holds a career 3.54 ERA, 1.096 WHIP, and 242/101 K/BB ratio in 180 2/3 innings at the MLB level.

Nestor Cortes has elected to become a free agent.

Cortes was outrighted off the Mariners' 40-man roster and will test the open market this winter rather than accepting a spot at Triple-A Tacoma. The 25-year-old left-hander got lit up for 14 runs -- 13 earned -- over 7 2/3 innings of work this season with Seattle before going down with an elbow impingement in mid-August.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Red Sox have interviewed Cubs coach Will Venable for their managerial opening.

Venable joined the Cubs' front office in 2017 after retiring as a player and then served as the team's first base coach in 2018 and 2019 before shifting to third base coaching duties in 2020. The 37-year-old graduate of Princeton University should eventually get a chance to manage somewhere, even if he doesn't ultimately land the job in Boston. Heyman notes that Alex Cora "has been viewed as the favorite" coming off his one-year suspension related to the Astros' sign-stealing operation from 2017. Dodgers coach George Lombard and Pirates coach Don Kelly are among the other known managerial candidates for the Red Sox.

Nationals re-signed INF/OF Josh Harrison to a one-year contract.

Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post hears that it carries a $1 million base salary and up to $250,000 in incentives based on total plate appearances. Harrison joined the Nationals this past July 27, a week after getting released by the Phillies, and went on to post a .278/.352/.418 batting line with three home runs in 33 games while appearing defensively at second base, third base, first base, left field, and right field. The 33-year-old former All-Star figures to reprise his role as a super-utilityman for Washington in 2021.
