2022 Player Outlook

Espinal kind of came out of nowhere and filled in nicely at the hot corner while Biggio was on the IL. We’re looking at a fairly small sample size but in 119 big league games across two seasons Espinal has a 84.4% contact rate. The league average is just 76.1%. He’s got good speed and was successful on six of his seven stolen base attempts. The Jays may seek to add a more established power hitting third baseman to their roster prior to the start of the regular season and that would obviously limit Espinal’s playing time. If they don’t, it’ll be interesting to see if Espinal is able to maintain his high batting average across a full season. Based on his .286 career minor league batting average and above average contact skills his hit tool seems like it’s for real.
