2023 Player Outlook

The Braves southpaw is coming off the best year of his career. Games Started (30), Innings Pitched (185.1), ERA (2.48), WHIP (1.01), BB Rate (1.55 BB/9 and 4.4%), and BAA (.224) are all career-best marks. The 29-year-old Fried is slated to be the “ace” of the Braves’ staff again in 2023. Ace is in quotes because he’s a bit of an unconventional ace. Sure, he eats a bunch of innings, has a low ERA, and keeps the ball in the park and all, but he just doesn’t strike a ton of hitters out. Fried has only produced one season (2019) in which he pitched a full season's worth of innings and posted above a 9.0 K/9 rate. Perhaps not getting the elite strikeout rate doesn’t matter as much when you’re still getting elite ERA, WHIP, and chances for wins like Fried gives you. Heading into 2023, expect to see about what we saw in 2022 from him with perhaps a tad bit better ratios as the defense for the Braves has improved in the offseason.
