2023 Player Outlook
Gausman won 12 games, struck out 205 batters, and pitched to a 3.35 ERA in 31 starts in his debut season for the Jays. He also had the highest O-Swing% (42.7) and fifth-best K-BB rate among qualified pitchers (24.4). However, he was much more effective when pitching on the road (2.30 ERA, 1.085 WHIP), compared to when he pitched at home in Rogers Centre (4.57 ERA, 1.413 WHIP). Gausman’s .363 BABIP led all qualified starters and was close to 50 points above his career average. Most of the major projection models expect his BABIP to normalize which should help to lower his 9.7 H/9. Those same models expect that Gausman’s durability will allow him to make another 30-plus starts and strike out upwards of 200 batters.
