2022 Player Outlook

Kimbrel was having a fantastic season as the Cubs closer in 2021, posting 23 saves with a 0.49 ERA, a 0.71 WHIP and 64 strikeouts over just 36.2 innings, but as an impending free agent, they dealt him across town where the wheels fell off the wagon at the absolute worst time. The only thing more frustrating than being the fantasy owner of a top-flight closer who gets traded to be a set-up man is to be that player in real life and know that your future employees will be staring at your 5.09 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 24 relief appearances. A trade to Los Angeles right before this season puts him in a better spot to be the full-time closer, although Blake Treinen should still see a handful of save opportunities. Regardless, Kimbrel's fantasy value takes a massive jump, and he should see the lion's share of the ninth inning work for the Dodgers.
