Week 13 saw the first zero-TD performance form Drew Brees in the dome. Meanwhile, Colin Kaepernick reminded us all why he was riding the pine to open the season in the first place. Some faulty QB play across the NFL caused for some weaker than usual red zone action. Ironically, it couldn’t have happened at a more importune time as many teams were fighting for their season long playoff lives. Whether you’ve advanced to the playoffs, or moved onto daily fantasy full time, the red zone report has the week that was and the outlook for the week ahead covered.

Here’s the Red Zone recap:

TARGET MONSTERS:

Jimmy Graham and Odell Beckham led the charge last weekend with five red zone targets each. They both converted just two of the five and Graham had the lobe red zone score of the duo. Beckham should again be quite active in Sunday’s prime time division matchup. However, for as much talent as he brings to the big stage, he brings an equal amount of volatility under that same spotlight. He’s an automatic playoff start in season long leagues and worthy of a big ticket DFS investment versus the 29th ranked Cowboys pass defense. Graham will continue to be productive across the board as well and if Thomas Rawls can continue to stabilize the running game, Graham could be headed for a big finish to the season.

Jordy Nelson continued his red zone assault of 2016 adding four more targets to his season high 28. Just for some perspective the No. 2 overall on the year in red zone targets is Michael Crabtree with 20. Speaking of Crabtree, he too had four more targets inside the 20 and another touchdown making six red zone touchdowns on the year for the Raiders’ wide receiver. Crabtree has been the most consistent weapon in that offense despite not having the same physical gifts of Amari Cooper. Cooper is pretty much 150 yards or 45 yards on a weekly basis and that sort of inconsistency can be devastating in head to head leagues. Give me Crabtree’s 15-plus FPPG on a steady basis every time, especially on Sundays!

MOST EFFICIENCT:

Week 12 waiver wire darling Taylor Gabriel had three red zone targets last week and nabbed all three. Unfortunately, he had no TD’s to show for it and Devonta Freeman took advantage of the remaining opportunities for Atlanta. Dennis Pitta on the other had was also a perfect 3-for-3 inside the 20 and converted two catches into score. Pitta has enjoyed a comeback season after numerous injuries the last few years, but his production remains sporadic in the Ravens’ offense.

Malcolm Mitchell continues to garner plenty of Tom Brady’s attention and was 2-for-2 on red zone targets. Brandin Cooks also caught both of his red zone looks after a depressing Week 12 showing. Unfortunately, neither found the end zone, but their Week 13 action bodes well for these last few remaining games. Terrance West on the other hand did convert one of his two red zone looks for a touchdown and continues to be relevant despite Kenneth Dixon’s increased role in the Baltimore offense. Dez Bryant, Brandon LaFell, Tyler Eifert, Randall Cobb and Donte Moncrief all caught their lone red zone target for a TD and all five of them have a chance to see the end zone again with their favorable Week 14 matchups.

ONES TO WATCH:

Theo Riddick has established himself as one of the better all-purpose backs in fantasy. The Lions don’t utilize a traditional running game in their offense, so expect Riddick to see plenty more pass catching opportunities in the red zone once again in Week 14 as they host the Bears. The Eagles have come way back down to Earth after a hot start to the year, but Zach Ertz has received a steady diet of targets lately, including three inside the red zone last week, one of which went for a touchdown. He’s viable in all formats versus the Redskins. Adam Thielen has flown under the radar all year, and offer touchdown upside in the below average Vikings offense. He has more fantasy appeal in standard leagues than Stefon Diggs. Ladarius Green had his 2016 coming out party last week, but the Bills on the road pose a tougher matchup. Green is still viable as a low end TE1, but he’s far from a sure thing in Week 14.
