It is already the middle of Week 3 of the fantasy baseball season and amazingly we have not been inundated with a plethora of catastrophic injuries…yet.  But you know they are coming because injuries are inevitable.  It seems incredible that I haven’t written about Troy Tulowitzki by now on the injury report, but I am sure there will be ample opportunities to do so later in the season.  Without any further ado, here is the next edition of the walking wounded.

Jacob deGrom (SP-NYM)

Somehow deGrom has avoided the disabled list after not making a start since April 8, but he is due back this weekend against the Braves.  The 2014 NL Rookie of the Year has been out due to the birth of his child and with lat soreness, but he is scheduled to make his return on Sunday against a terrible Atlanta lineup which makes him a great option in daily leagues.

Charlie Blackmon (OF-COL)

Blackmon became a fantasy darling last year but got off to an awful start this season.  He was placed on the disabled list late last week with a toe injury which he said was an aggravation of a previous bout with turf toe.  The bad news is that he has acknowledged that he is unsure how long he will be out or the severity of the injury.  This is a big blow to fantasy owners in a similar fashion to the loss of A.J. Pollock.  The internal options in Colorado are not great choices for your fantasy roster so you may want to start exploring some trade opportunities.

Brett Gardner (OF-NYY)

The Yankees scratched Brett Gardner from the lineup on Wednesday after dealing with some stiffness in his neck.  This is residual from the fall he took in Toronto last week and NOT because he got a Viagara stuck in his throat.  He is considered day-to-day and shouldn’t miss much time assuming the stiffness goes away quickly.  The Yankees need him in the lineup to ignite a stale and aged offense.

Shelby Miller (SP-ARZ)

After a very solid 2015 season which was not reflected in his win/loss record, expectations were high for Shelby Miller after being dealt to the Diamondbacks.  However, it has been a disastrous start to the season as Miller has been shelled to the tune of an 8.53 ERA and 1.82 WHIP through three terrible starts.  His latest outing ended early after sustaining a cut on his finger but it was more like a mercy killing.  He is expected to make his next start but his performance thus far has not warranted a spot in your starting lineup.

Trevor Plouffe (3B-MIN)

Plouffe has been placed on the disabled list with a right intercostal strain.  He provides a respectable amount of power for deep leagues, but the real significance of this injury is the possibility of Miguel Sano possibly getting enough time at the hot corner to qualify at third base in fantasy leagues.  Sano will likely stay in the outfield or DH most of the time, but leagues that don’t have significant eligibility requirements could be greatly affected if Sano becomes qualified at the shallow third base position.

Adonis Garcia (3B-ATL)

Garcia was not in the Braves lineup on Wednesday after being hit by a pitch in the knee during Tuesday’s game.  It appears to be simply a contusion so he should not miss much time from the injury.  Garcia is merely an option in very deep leagues as the cleanup hitter in an anemic lineup and will have to go against the Mets dynamic starting pitching this coming weekend.
