Short slate today folks, and if it wasn’t for yesterday’s Cubs/ Brewers rainout, the pitching slate would be looking particularly ugly. OK, still is, but we’ve at least got one ace in play. I’ve split it up into early and late slates to help those who like to split their day up, but obviously, the all-day slate is available on FanDuel and Draft Kings. Here’s the data and who I like:

Early

Jake Arrieta, CHC – Well duh! Now maybe there are some who are concerned about a pitcher being thrown off his routine, so if you’re someone like that and are balking at the high expense here, move along. The rest of us will watch Arrieta follow up his no-no with a yes-yes as far as a win and a bunch of strikeouts.

Tanner Roark, WAS – He’s not going to strike out 15 guys, though the Phillies do fan at a 22-percent clip against right-handers, so he should grab a fair amount. Problem is that, save for yesterday, the Phils have been hitting the ball a little better, so I could see a quality start here, but not a shutout.

Aaron Nola, PHI – The Nationals have been struggling to put runs up on the board lately as evidenced by their .270 wOBA over the last seven days and .294 wOBA for the year against righties. Similarly to Roark though, I could see a quality start but no shutout. Decent K’s.

Jose Fernandez, MIA – He’s struggled with his command through his first few starts as evidenced by the increase in walks and drop in strikeouts. The Dodgers have been very middle of the road this season with a strikeout rate just above 21-percent against righties and a wOBA hovering right around .300. They’ve also lost three in a row to the fish and have plated just five runs in total, so I have a tough time going against Fernandez here. If he can keep the walks to a minimum, he should have a strong night.

Kenta Maeda, LAD – How do you not just roll with Maeda as your top hurler tonight? He’s allowed one run all year and has posted rock-solid strikeout totals. The Fish are striking out 20-percent of the time and have a wOBA right around .300 against righties. Teams are seeing him for the first time and still don’t have everything they need on him. The price is solid on FanDuel and Aces.

Clay Buchholz, BOS – I hate recommending this guy, but it’s the Braves and there’s absolutely nothing to like about their offense. Buchholz has his shortcomings for sure, but if Steven Wright can dominate these cats, Buchholz should be able to hold his own.
