Ellis has averaged just 6.5 points, 2.0 assists, and 3.0 rebounds while playing 26.5 minutes per game in two playoff starts thus far. His slow start has resulted in C.J. Miles getting the starting nod in Game 3. Look for Ellis to see a slightly reduced role while coming off the bench. It's unclear if Ellis will return to the starting lineup or come off the bench in Sunday's Game 4.
General manager John Mozeliak reported that the team was reassured that Siegrist should be able to return right at or just after the 10-day period that encompasses his disabled list stint. However, due to the fact that his condition is considered chronic, the veteran right-hander is likely to deal with some lingering soreness on a long-term basis. Siegrist has had an up-and-down campaign thus far, posting a 4.28 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 25:15 K:BB over 27.3 innings across 31 appearances while notching three holds, a victory and a save.
General manager John Mozeliak reported that the team was reassured that Fowler should be able to return right at or just after the 10-day period that encompasses his disabled list stint. However, due to the fact that his condition is considered chronic, the veteran outfielder is likely to deal with some lingering soreness on a long-term basis.
Scherzer gave up a run on a hit batsman and a triple in the first inning, but he was razor sharp the rest of the way and allowed just one more man to reach over the next five frames. He was removed after throwing just 93 pitches through six, but a large lead at that point likely factored into that decision. In another season of excellence, Scherzer has been exceptional of late, allowing more than one earned run just once in the last seven starts while posting an otherworldly 75:8 K:BB over 54 innings in that span. He continues to rattle off strong performances and should be expected to do so once again Sunday against the Cardinals.
Arrieta struggled to gain a grasp of the strike zone in this one, throwing just 54 percent of his pitches for strikes while issuing six walks for just the fourth time in his big league career. He also failed to control the Nats' baserunners in any fashion, yielding six stolen bases to help the opposing offense manufacture runs. This poor performance also continued a disturbing recent trend of short outings for Arrieta, who has failed to complete five innings in three of his last four starts. He owns an ugly 17:11 K:BB over 20 innings during that span and will look to right the ship Sunday against the Reds.
Boxberger fired 20 pitches overall, 13 of which he threw for strikes, in what is supposed to be his final rehab outing before being activated by the Rays. The former closer had been sent back down to the Stone Crabs for Tuesday's appearance in order to get him one final tune-up, following an appearance for Triple-A Durham last Wednesday that led to some residual soreness.
It's his 17th homer of the year but just his third in June, although Duvall has maintained his fantasy value by hitting .305 (25-for-82) on the month. The 28-year-old now sports a career-best .874 OPS and appears set to top last season's breakout performance.
The young lefty has long struggled with control issues, and the 5.36 BB/9 he compiled over 42 innings with the Rays earlier in the season played a significant part in his demotion to Triple-A Durham. However, Snell displayed notable improvement in that area as his minor-league stint unfolded, giving up just four walks over the 17.2 innings encompassing his most recent trio of starts. He also racked up a sterling 5-0 record and 2.66 ERA, so both the Rays and Snell certainly have reason that the adjustments he made with the Bulls will pay dividends at the big-league level this go-around.
Williams, who limited the baserunners quite effectively in this one, gave up an RBI groundout in the fourth and was scored upon again after the first two men reached as he tried to extend into the eighth. He was on the hook for a loss despite the quality start, but a late push from his offense bailed him out in that regard. After being battered for much of the early part of the season, Williams seems to be coming into his own at the big league level and has now tossed consecutive quality starts for the second time in 2017. He still holds a hefty 4.82 ERA, but an enticing matchup with the Giants awaits the in-form 25-year-old on Sunday.
The Rays selected the contract of minor-league hurler Adam Kolarek on Tuesday, so they utilized the Kiermaier move to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. The rangy outfielder remains out indefinitely with a fractured hip.
His leadoff shot to right field set the tone for the game, as the two teams combined for seven homers. Hamilton now has a grand total of two home runs on the season, with his other coming in early May, and the switch-hitting speedster hasn't been able to benefit from 2017's league-wide power surge.
Pruitt has struggled mightily over his 31.2 innings with the Rays this season, as he currently holds a 6.25 ERA. He'll be sent to Triple-A Durham where he'll face lighter competition with the hopes of getting his groove back on the mound.
His last save came back on June 8, as Iglesias hasn't gotten a lot of work this month for a struggling Reds squad. His 1.69 ERA and 45:16 K:BB in 37.1 innings suggest the right-hander could be an elite fantasy closer if he were pitching for a better team and got more opportunities, however.
