Asuaje was facing an uphill battle in Padres camp thanks to the presence of veteran Erick Aybar and Rule 5 pick Allen Cordoba in San Diego's middle infield. The 25-year-old, originally an 11th round draft pick by Boston in 2013, hit a sharp .321/.378/.473 in 134 games for El Paso in 2016 and could very well be San Diego's first option should they suffer an injury in the middle infield.
It was another tough-luck outcome for Rodon, who left his bullpen with a lead they were unable to hold onto. He has now tossed four straight quality starts, a stretch over which he has zero wins but owns a shiny 2.10 ERA and 28:9 K:BB across 29.2 innings. More impressively, all four outings have come against first place teams (Dodgers, Indians, Astros and Red Sox). Rodon will look to keep lowering his 4.00 ERA as he toes the rubber against the Twins in his next appearance.
Although he was able to notch a quality start, it wasn't Darvish's finest outing; he served up a season-high three homers while failing to strikeout three batters for the first time in his career (125 starts). He left the game in line for a loss, but a ninth inning rally from the Dodgers got him off the hook and left his undefeated record as a Dodger. He now boasts a 2.50 ERA and 22:4 K:BB in three starts (18 innings) for his new team, so look for him to turn in another quality outing when he faces off against a slumping Pittsburgh team Tuesday.
Gray didn't have to do much to get in the win column, as the Rockies put up 14 runs through the first five innings, but he still managed to toss his third quality start over his last four tries. He's been rock solid since giving up eight runs to the Mets right after the All-Star break, registering a 3.72 ERA and 35:8 K:BB across six starts (36.1 innings). He'll look to keep things rolling when he toes the rubber next against the Royals on Tuesday.
After striking out 11 hitters in a quality start to begin the month, Foltynewicz has turned in consecutive poor outings, allowing a combined 14 runs over just six innings. His ERA now sits at an unimpressive 4.75 through 127 innings (22 starts), though he is striking batters out at a solid clip (8.6 K/9). He'll look to turn things around when he faces the Mariners on Monday.
The gap between Gallo's average and slugging percentage just keeps growing, as he's now slugging .577 while hitting only .211 for a league-leading .366 isolated power. Gallo has 14 hits in 14 games this month and 10 of them have left the yard.
Andrus broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning with his 16th home run of the season and drove in two more runs with a single one inning later before adding another RBI single in the seventh. The veteran shortstop has made great advancements in the power department, already doubling last season's previous best of eight long balls in 32 fewer games while blowing his career .368 slugging percentage out of the water with a .483 mark. That extra pop hasn't come at the cost of his trademark speed, as Andrus' steal was his 23rd.
Beltre continues to pummel the ball at Globe Life Park in Arlington, and is now hitting .378 at home compared to .244 on the road. His two-run homer was the last at-bat against starter Anibal Sanchez before the right-hander exited with hamstring tightness, opening up the floodgates for a Texas lineup that ultimately came away with 12 runs.
Mazara erased a 2-0 deficit with one swing in the second inning before adding an RBI single in the sixth. The 22-year-old outfielder has driven in runs with more regularity of late, accruing 20 RBI in the past 18 games after totaling just 57 RBI over his first 90.
Mahtook took Cole Hamels deep in the third inning, tying his career high of nine home runs set as a rookie in 2015. The center fielder has been surprisingly effective at the plate of late, launching three homers in his past seven games while coming away with multiple hits in eight of his past 12 despite failing to do so here.
Kinsler did all his damage against starter Cole Hamels, reaching base all four times they faced off. The second baseman led off the game with a home run, promptly reminding the team he hit 156 homers with between 2006 and 2013 of his power. He also came around to score on a Mikie Mahtook long ball after walking in the third and added a steal in the fifth.
Hamels should buy his offense a Texas-sized steak dinner after this one, as the Rangers' bats erased two-run deficits in both the second and third innings before nudging ahead for good with a run in the fifth and pulling away with four in the sixth. Command was a major issue for Hamels, who walked a season-high five batters while also allowing multiple home runs in a game for just the second time in 15 starts. He excelled at damage control, though, using a timely pickoff to wriggle out of trouble after the Tigers had runners at first and third with one out in the third inning and later escaping unscathed after they loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Hamels' next start is scheduled for Monday against an Angels team that he's limited to one run over 14.2 innings in two meetings this season.
Springer once again excelled at setting the table out of the leadoff spot, pushing his OBP to .380 while raising his season run total to 86 in his 100th game. The 2011 first-rounder has been mired in a serious power slump by his lofty standards with just one homer in the past 19 games and remains one shy of last year's career-high 29.
