Week 5 was not the red zone frenzy we’ve grown accustomed to in recent weeks. There were a few unlikely red zone heroes which unfortunately may have been sitting on some fantasy team benches (or worse waiver wires).  A lot of the scoring was either done on the ground or big plays through the air. Between the goal and the twenty, there may have been less action, but certainly a lot we can learn from regardless.

Here’s the Red Zone recap:

TARGET MONSTERS:

Not only did the 49ers wide receiver Jeremy Kerley lead all skill players in snaps played last week, but he also led them in red zone targets as well with four. He was able to haul in half of those targets and one of which for a score. Outside of Kerley, Tavon Austin, Todd Gurley, Amari Cooper and Mike Evans had the next highest red zone target totals. Each of them had 3 targets a piece, but between the four of them all they had to show for that action was two catches and zero TD’s.

There was one other receiver who plays for the Bears who was a red zone beast Sunday with 3 targets, but it wasn’t the one you may think…

MOST EFFICIENCT:

The Bears are an offense on the rise. Yes, I know how crazy that sounds. However, since Brian Hoyer took over at QB, they’ve garnered quite a bit of fantasy attention. Wide receiver Cameron Meredith is the latest addition to that list and on Sunday he was a perfect 3 for 3 in the red zone with a TD. But he wasn’t even close to the most obscure and unthinkable in terms of the red zone in Week 5.

There were questions as to how the red zone would shake out for the Patriots once Tom Brady returned. Well, the early voting showed Martellus Bennett to be the leader with 2 TD’s on both of his targets inside the 20. Rob Gronkowksi had zero and Julian Edelman had just two red zone targets (of which he caught one). This will be a tough call week to week, but expect Gronk and Edelman to get their fair share as the season moves forward.

Apparently as we approach Halloween, The Ghost of Fantasy Sleepers Past resurfaced in the form of Vikings WR Cordarrelle Patterson. He too was a perfect 2 for 2 and a TD to boot. Any given Sunday proves to still hold truth. Another fantasy specter of sorts, Brandon LaFell, who’s best known for dropping balls instead of catching them, was a perfect 2 for 2 with 2 TD’s last week. Too bad these TD’s didn’t help 99% of fantasy owners. Don’t start chasing last week with either of these two.

ONES TO WATCH:

Dwayne Allen is beginning to work his way closer to our off season expectations and Sunday he caught both of his red zone targets (one of which for a TD). Allen should continue to be a red zone target for Andrew Luck despite the presence of Jack Doyle. He may even be a “buy low” right now. Theo Riddick was also 2 for 2 but with 2 TD’s in the red zone. With Justin Forsett now a part of the backfield in Detroit, Riddick could see his red zone looks reduced. Brice Butler hauled in one of his two red zone targets for a score this weekend and continues to be useful in deeper leagues while Dez Bryant is out. DeAndre Hopkins had just two targets in the red zone (1 TD) and it’s high time the Texans get him more involved in the offense. They’ll have that opportunity this weekend as the Texans will face a putrid Colts defense. This will be the multiple TD performance owners have been waiting on all season. If it isn’t then Brock Osweiler needs to be benched.
