This year I was in two leagues with the folks over at SiriusXM. One of the league was with the other hosts on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio. The other was with my co-hosts, Kyle Elfrink & Kay Adams, and a group of listeners that qualified for the league. Continuing my sad theme of the 2013 season, here is how I did in both leagues.
Livin' The Fantasy Listeners League
My first round selection was Ryan Braun. He played 61 games.
My second round selection was Jose Reyes. He played 93 games.
My third round selection was B.J. Upton. He was the worst regular in baseball.
The injured – Kevin Youkilis, Rickie Weeks, Cameron Maybin, Yasmani Grandal, Derek Jeter, Joel Hanrahan, Brandon Morrow. I mean, seriously. Is there any league I did this season where I didn't have at least six guys who missed more games than they played? Losing is one thing, but when it's on the back of one injury after another after another... jeez.
Things looked way up after that with Round 4-8 being strong choices: Ryan Zimmerman, Shin-Soo Choo, Martin Prado, Carlos Santana and Victor Martinez.. I also made solid choices in Round 13 (Dexter Fowler), Round 18 (Kenley Jansen), Round 21 (Manny Machado) and Round 28 (Michael Brantley).
I was able to swing a couple of good deals too.
I dealt Jose Reyes on August 7th and got back Starling Castro and Austin Jackson. Castro stunk. Oh well.
On May 6th I made a deal. I gave up a massive amount of offense to get back the pitching I desperately needed. Out went Carlos Santana, Shin-Soo Choo and Kenley Jansen. In return I got back Wellington Castillo to be my second catcher (didn't work out so well), Andre Ethier to replace Choo (Puig was nowhere on the radar at that point), Matt Cain and Cliff Lee. I also did another deal on May 3rd to bolster my sagging pitching by dealing rookie Tony Cingrani and I got back Chris Sale and Corey Hart (perfect that I got back an injured guy we didn't see all year, isn't it?). I added Sale, Cain and Lee in trades. Despite those moves here are my standings on the hill (remember, 11 teams): 7.5 points in wins, seven points in ERA, seven points in K, seven points in saves and eight points in WHIP. Should have been better, right?
Even with all the good things I did there was always a negative taking me down.
SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio Experts League
Same old story. Stop me if you've heard it before.
HanRam and Upton flat out killed me.
Other hitters that tanked included Melky Cabrera (14th round), Juan Pierre (16) & Kevin Youkilis (17). I did make some astute moves offensively with Adam Dunn in the 15th and Brandon Belt in the 20th.
Off waivers I added the following batters.
Chris Nelson hit .220 with three RBIs in 50 at-bats. Neil Walker hit .245 over 159 at-bats. Stephen Drew hit .204 over 103 at-bats. Chris Denorfia hit .125 over 32 at-bats. Adam Lind hit .233 over 43 at-bats. Gordon Beckham hit .212 over 66 at-bats. Juan Francisco hit .218 over 87 at-bats.
Not much success there.
On the bump, more struggles. Yovani Gallardo (8), Tim Lincecum (11), J.J. Putz (12), John Axford (13), James McDonald (23), Wandy Rodriguez (24) and Edinson Volquez (25). How bad does this group look in retrospect? As a result of how poor the unit was, I was constantly tinkering. I made 44 moves, I was one of only two teams to make more than 33. It didn't help. In the I finished last in the league in saves, last in ERA, and last in WHIP. Total disaster. Usually when things start to go bad on the hill, I just load up with middle relievers, try to get lucky in the saves column, and improve in the ratio categories as well. Didn't work out here as I tried to move up in wins and Ks (I finished second in both categories so at least that worked). My team finished with a 3.93 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Those are league average numbers.
FINISH – Livin': 7 out of 11 teams. FINISH – Experts: 7 out of 12 teams.
