Trade Deadline day is often it's wild and hairy leading up to the 4 PM EDT trade deadline. Not so much today. Is this the most boring trade deadline in recent memory?
THREE TEAM DEAL
Peavy missed six weeks this year with a fractured rib, and as I keep noting the guy is a huge injury risk. Having failed to toss 115 innings in three of the past four years hasn't disuaded the Red Sox from adding him to the mix. Peavy is 8-4 with impressive marks (8.55 K/9, 4.47 K/BB, 1.14 WHIP) and should give the Sox the arm they need to fill in for the continually injured Clay Buchholz.
Garcia could allow the White Sox to deal Alex Rios. Through 53 big league games the outfielder has hit .269 with two homers, 13 RBIs and zero steals. He's also sporting an anemic 0.23 BB/K ratio. He does have power, and lots of tools, but he must hone in his strike zone control.
Igelsias gives the Tigers coverage of Jhonny Peralta is suspended. Known more for his glove than bat, Iglesias has hit .330 for the Red Sox this year, aided by an inordinant number of infield hits and a .376 BABIP. He's never going to be able to sustain this pace, but he should be a solid big leaguer, even if not a fantasy force.
Now the other moves that were made in baseball...
Drew Butera - The backup catcher was dealt to the Dodgers. The former Twin backstop had three at-bats this season and is a .182 career hitter over 490 big league at-bats.
Grant Green - Dealt to the Angels for Alberto Callaspo. A good get for the Angels. Green can play multiple positions and he was batting .325 with 11 homers, 50 RBIs and 66 runs scored in just 87 games at Triple-A this season. Looks like Callaspo will play 2B for the Athletics. He's still nothing more than an AL-only option. Unless Howie Kendrick is dealt, Grant might spend some time at Triple-A.
Ian Kennedy - Has been dealt to the Padres in exchange for Joe Thatcher, RHP Matt Stites (Double-A) and a draft pick. Kennedy has struggled mightily this season with a 3-8 record, 5.23 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. He's better than that. He leaves the offensive environment in Arizona for a pitcher's haven in San Diego, a big key since he's a fly ball hurler who will be greatly aided by Petco Park. This trade could make him mixed league relevant again.
Justin Maxwell - Dealt to the Royals, he's a 20/20 talent that has dealt with injuries and poor batting averages. In 671 career at-bats he owns a sickly .222 batting average but he does have 29 homers, 24 steals, 87 RBIs and 101 runs scored. Figures that he will battle for starts with Lorenzo Cain, David Lough and Jarrod Dyson (he might end up platooning with Lough batting against lefties).
Bud Norris - He's been dealt to the Orioles to pitch in the AL East. He'll enter the rotation with a 6-9 record, 3.93 ERA, and 1.41 WHIP. That's nothing more than league average stuff. Add in the fact that his K/9 mark is down two full batters this season to 6.43, and I'm just not a fan right now. The Astros received L.J. Hoes and a draft pick in the deal.
Don't forget that players can still be traded for the next month, but now they will have to pass through the waiver process in order to be moved.
