2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: The 2023 season is one Giolito would rather forget. He pitched for three teams and he got off to a good start with a 3.79 ERA in his first 21 starts with the White Sox. However, his season got progressively worse as his ERA, BB% and hard hit rate steadily climbed throughout the season. Giolito allowed 21 home runs in his final 12 starts of the season and posted a 6.89 ERA in six starts for the Angels and a 7.04 ERA in six starts for the Guardians.

Outlook 2024: Despite his lost 2023 season there’s room for some optimism for Giolito in 2023. He still struck out more than a batter per nine innings at every stop last season and his changeup (.209 BAA, 35.2 WHIFF %) and slider (.236 BAA, 34.5 WHIFF %) were still very effective last season. With his signing of a two-year $38.5 million contract with the Red Sox that allows him to opt out at the end of the season he has an incentive (as if he needed any) to regain his old form as a top of the rotation starting pitcher. There’s some sleeper appeal here.
