Also, keep an eye on the latest PGA Tour golf news before finalizing those daily fantasy golf lineups. Before we get into DFS golf lineup strategies for the Memorial, let's first review what happened this past weekend on the PGA Tour.
You have to love a playoff finish, especially when it’s two of the best young players on the tour. After winning the Match Play and the Masters in back-to-back starts, Scottie Scheffler had a mini-slump of two Top 20s and a missed cut at the PGA Championship. Still, he put his name right back at the top of the leaderboard in last week's tournament and proved to be a DFS PGA top play. Sam Burns came out on top in extra holes, but Scheffler will not be denied this season.
While all the talk has been about Scottie, Burns just won his third event of the 2021-2022 PGA Tour season. If it wasn’t for Scheffler, Burns would be the leader in FedEx Cup points by a wide margin. Both of these guys are taking a well-deserved break this week as the rest of the PGA Tour heads to Ohio for the Memorial Tournament.
The Memorial Tournament Course
The first thing you should think about when you hear the Memorial is Jack Nicklaus – it's his tournament. Muirfield Village is in Dublin, Ohio, which is about a 20-minute drive from his hometown of Columbus. The course measures 7,543 total yards, which is a little longer than an average PGA Tour course these days. It’s known as a golfers’ golf course because it really does not favor any specific type of player. You can win in a number of different ways from the risk/reward style to a more patient approach. This course is long and features small slick contoured greens.
When you start looking at this golf course and what key stats to target, I’ll start where I do almost every week with Strokes Gained: Approach. Twelve of the past 14 winners have ranked inside the Top 10 of Strokes Gained: Approach. While hitting the fairway is always important, these fairways are not the toughest on tour to land. I spoke about the greens being smaller, this is why I feel like you have to focus on ball-strikers (Strokes Gained: Tee to Green) and their approach. Proximity to the hole will be vital to success on these greens. Scrambling will be very important when these players inevitably miss these smaller greens. The bunkers are very tough and are strategically placed throughout the course. There are seven Par 4's that stretch out 447 yards or further, which means I’m immediately taking a look at Par 4 Efficiency 450-500. Three of the four Par 3's are right around 200 yards and the other one is 185. I’ll take a closer look at Par 3 Efficiency 175-200.
PGA DFS Top Golfers at the Memorial
While this week only features 120 golfers, we’ve got a top-tier field competing at the Memorial. We’ve got Jon Rahm, Rory McIlory, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris, Collin Morikawa, Cameron Smith, and Hideki Matsuyama to name a few. Bryson DeChambeau won this tournament in 2018, he returns to action for the first time since his wrist surgery saying, “it's been a long time coming." When you look through the previous winners of this event, you’ll see a wide variety of players from bombers to ball strikers to course managers. It just drives home the point that you can attack and beat this course in a number of different ways.
The players will get a little bit of a break from the heat this weekend. The temperatures will be in the mid-to-upper 70s throughout the tournament. When I’m writing this article on Monday evening, they are calling for showers on Thursday morning, but other than that it looks to be clear skies. Now let's take a closer look at the PGA DFS top plays for the Memorial Tournament as you build those daily fantasy golf lineups.
