A big shout out to my buddy Dan Malin for filling in for me last week. He did a killer job and can’t thank him enough for doing that. I had surgery and needed a week to just rest and recover but I’m back in the saddle just in time for the Memorial. Quick note, I was so pumped to see Brooks Koepka take down the PGA Championship because I really needed that win in my one and done league. While I personally don’t love what the LIV Tour represents and has done to the game of golf, you have to appreciate greatness while it’s there. The guy is healthy and playing at the top of his game once again. Let’s get into Jack’s tournament.

The Memorial Golf Tournament is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on the PGA Tour held annually at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Jack Nicklaus established the event in 1976, and it quickly became one of the most revered tournaments on the schedule. The tournament honors the memory of golf greats and celebrates their contributions to the sport. Known for its challenging course and rich history, the Memorial attracts top-ranked players from around the world, offering a thrilling showcase of skill and strategy. Beyond the competition, the event supports charitable causes, making a positive impact on the community. The Memorial Golf Tournament continues to captivate golf enthusiasts and inspire the next generation of players.

Muirfield Village is about a 20 minute drive from Jack’s hometown of Columbus, Ohio.  The course measures out 7,543 yards which is a little longer than an average PGA Tour course these days. This championship course offers a strategic layout for players. It features undulating fairways, well-placed bunkers, and fast, demanding greens. Its tree-lined fairways require accurate drives, while the perfectly positioned hazards demand precision shot-making. The course rewards strategic thinking and course management, offering risk-reward opportunities throughout. With its impeccable conditioning, Muirfield Village Golf Club provides a world-class playing experience. Players must showcase their skill, composure, and adaptability to conquer this iconic course and its signature challenges.

The key stats begin and end with Strokes Gained: Approach. Twelve of the past 14 winners have ranked inside the Top 10 of Strokes Gained: Approach.  While hitting the fairway is always important, these fairways are not the toughest on tour to land. The greens are on the smaller side, which is why you need to focus on ball strikers (Strokes Gained: Tee to Green). Players will miss these small greens which will bring scrambling into play.

While this tournament only features 120 golfers, it’s a designated event which means only the cream of the crop will be participating. Number one player in the world Scottie Scheffler fresh off his third straight Top 5 finish at the Colonial. The second best player in the world and should be two time winner of this event Jon Rahm will also be in Ohio. Rory McIlory, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland, Sam Burns, Justin Thomas, and Matthew Fitzpatrick are just a few of the biggest names in this field of 120.

It’s just hard to pass on Scottie right now. While he hasn’t been able to close the door on a victory since THE PLAYERS in early March, he’s got three straight Top 5 finishes coming into this weekend. He did not participate in this event last year but he’s improved his finish in each of his three trips scoring a 3rd in 2021. I think Scottie will be higher owned than Rahm, but both are fantastic plays this weekend.

GPatrick Cantlay1050023.8%11800

Since his win at the BMW Championship in mid-August, he has made the cut in 13 of his next 14 starts with eight Top 10s. He is on the heels of a Top 10 at the PGA Championship. Patrick has an incredible history at Muirfield, in his 7 trips, he had 5 Top 10 finishes including two victories. He should be locked into all of your cash lineups.

Game Type: CASH & GPP
GViktor Hovland970016.6%11100

Viktor followed up his runner-up finish at the PGA Championship with a Top 20 (13th since 22’ Open Championship) at the Charles Schwab last weekend. The guy is just too talented not to compete every week. If his putter could be more consistent, he’d already have a major or two. He ranks Top 15 in Strokes Gained: Approach, Tee to Green and Off the Tee. Viktor finished 3rd in his first trip to Memorial but his last three trips have been less than stellar. I’m not going to let that stop me from rostering one of the hottest players on the PGA Tour.

Game Type: CASH & GPP
GTyrrell Hatton930017.5%10400

While he didn’t get that first career major at the PGA Championship, Hatton did finish Top 15 at Oak Hill. That was his 4th consecutive Top 20 finish. The guy has seven victories between the PGA Tour and International play, he knows how to win but does have a tendency to let his anger get the better of him. This will be his first trip back to Muirfield since 2019 but his game should fit this course well. The guy currently ranks Top 20 in Tee to Green, Off the Tee, Approach and Putting. The 31 year old Englishman should be in the mix this weekend in Ohio.

GJustin Thomas920012.7%10900

This 15 time PGA Tour winner has just been a bit off and hasn’t been able to really find it since his 2022 PGA Championship victory. He missed the cut at the Masters, finished 25th at the RBC Heritage, 14th at the Wells Fargo but barely made the cut at the PGA. Once again, the price tag is just too tempting to ignore, but will he pay us off? Despite the struggles to close, he still ranks 5th in Around the Green, 13th in Tee to Green, 32nd in Birdie Average, and 47th in Total Driving. We know his skill level but can he put it together for four rounds?

GRickie Fowler850017.1%10000

If it wasn’t for Jason Day winning at the Byron Nelson, I think Rickie would be a shoe in for the Comeback Player of the Year. He’s been incredible since his 11th place finish at the Farmers Insurance. Since that tournament, he’s finished Top 20 eight more times including  Top 10 last week at Colonial. I really believe it’s only a matter of time before he wins again. He currently ranks Top 15 in Approach and Tee to Green and also Top 50 in Around the Green and Putting. The game is definitely back but can he close one out to earn his sixth career victory.

GSahith Theegala840012.5%9600

Since his Top 10 at the Masters and Top 5 the following week at the RBC, it’s been a bit of a slog for Theegala but that won’t deter me. Sahith finished Top 5 at this event last year and knowing how good he is throughout the bag, that should not surprise anyone. He’s solid across the board ranking Top 35 in Around the Greens and Putting and also Top 70 in Tee to Green and Approach. I’d feel confident starting him in cash or GPPs this weekend.

Game Type: CASH & GPP
GCorey Conners830014.7%9900

Since his surprising missed cut at the Masters following his win at the Valero, he’s righted the ship finishing Top 10 at the Wells Fargo and Top 12 at the PGA Championship. It all comes down to putting when looking at Conners, when he’s got it going on the greens, there are few that are better than him from a ball striking standpoint. He has never missed the cut at the Memorial with two Top 25 finishes including last year. After early struggles, we are starting to see his typical stats ranking Top 20 in Tee to Green, Off the Tee and Approach. He should land these greens and being that they are so small, he won’t have to putt from long distances.

GSi Woo Kim800010.9%9600

We are back to the rollercoaster ride of results for Si Woo over the last two months. He has two Top 10s and two missed cuts over his last six starts. We’ve seen good recent results from Si Woo at Muirfield finishing Top 20 in his last three trips. He’s a winner already this season and ranks Top 40 in Tee to Green, Approach and Off the Tee. He’s always a tournament player for me because he’s just too volatile to risk in cash lineups.

Game Type: GPP
GRussell Henley79009.8%9500

The last time I recommended Henley was at the Masters in the low 7K range and paid off for us in a big way finishing 4th overall at Augusta. That has springboarded him to two more Top 20 finishes at the RBC and Charles Schwab. Russell has mixed results at Muirfield with two Top 10 finishes but three missed cuts. He still leads the PGA Tour in Driving Accuracy and also Top 80 in Tee to Green, Approach, Off the Tee, and Around the Greens. I’m going to save him for tournament lineups knowing his history on this course.

Game Type: GPP
GEmiliano Grillo78008.6%9200

Putting has always been an issue for Grillo but it did not hold him back from winning his second career PGA Tour event at the Charles Schwab last weekend in Texas. That was his third Top 10 finish in his last four starts. He’s a great ball striker, up there with the best in the world. Grillo currently ranks Top 60 in Tee to Green, Approach and Off the Tee. We know he’s playing well and the price tag is perfect for cash or tournaments.

GMatt Kuchar75009.2%8900

The 44-year-old Kuchar has started to look old once again over his last few starts with finishes of 23rd, 43rd, and a missed cut at the PGA Championship. My hope is that a return to a course like Muirfield that he loves and has had great success on in his career will get him back on track. The 9-time PGA Tour winner ranks 1st in Around the Green, 1st in Scrambling, 11th in  Scoring Average, 28th in Tee to Green, 47th in Putting, 56th in Greens in Regulation, and 89th in Approach.  He may not have the distance off the tee, but he’s still a smart savvy veteran on the PGA Tour.

GRyan Fox71006.0%8900

I mentioned that Fox hasn’t played a lot but when he does, it has been a noticeable finish. Ryan has back to back Top 25 finishes at the PGA Championship and at the Charles Schwab. The 36 year old from New Zealand knows how to play on the biggest stages. In his last full season on the DP World Tour in 2022, he ranked 4th in Approach, 5th in Tee to Green, 5th in Stroke Average, 6th in Driving Distance, 17th in Around the Green, 35th in Greens in Regulation, 47th in Off the Tee, and 49th in Putting. He has only been to Muirfield once before and missed the cut. I’d keep him to tournaments.

Suh’s entrance onto the PGA Tour was overshadowed by Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland but he was just as highly regarded coming out of college at USC. While he doesn’t have the wins and notoriety as his contemporaries, we’ve seen him splash a few times this season. Suh has made 14 of 15 cuts in 2023 with two Top 10s and another two Top 25s. He currently ranks 12th in Proximity, 14th in Strokes Gained: Putting, 50th in Putting Average, 58th in Birdie Average, and 62nd in Driving Accuracy. No, those numbers are not amazing but in this price range, they are stellar in this field.

We’ve talked multiple times about this guy’s ability to drive the golf ball. This Canadian has played some good golf recently finishing Top 30 in three of his last four starts. While the stats don’t show it this season, we’ve seen him crush the ball from the tee box (36th in Off the Tee) on a week in and week out basis. No, he hasn’t played Muirfield before but I believe his game will translate. I love the upside he brings at this price point.

Austin finished runner up at the Byron Nelson and Top 20 last week at the Charles Schwab. Eckroat is Top 25 in Off the Tee, Top 65 in Tee to Green, and Top 80 in Putting.
