Sponsor's invite Kamaiu Johnson has removed his name from the field ahead of this week's Farmers Insurance Open, citing a positive COVID-19 test result. Willie Mack III will receive an invite in his place.
Johnson was set to play his first PGA TOUR event this week but that will have to hold off a bit longer. The 2020 APGA Tour Championship winner provided a statement, "To say that I’m disappointed would be a massive understatement. I’ve dreamed of playing on the PGA TOUR for a long, long time, but health and safety come first. It’s times like these where you have to keep focusing on the bigger picture at hand, and from my experience, a fork in the road often has an interesting way of leading to new opportunities. Getting a brief glimpse of the Farmers Insurance Open and what it would be like to play on the PGA TOUR only further ignites the fire inside me to work that much harder to chase the dream of playing on TOUR full-time." This is tough news for Johnson but you hope the TOUR finds a way to pay him back with an invite into another upcoming event. Taking his spot will be Willie Mack who will have his PGA TOUR debut moved up a few weeks with this news. Mack received the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption to play in the Genesis Invitational which takes place in three weeks.

Harold Varner III Headshot
Harold Varner III was 2.5 shots better than the field average on Sunday at Bay Hill and he'll look to build on that momentum as he preps for THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
HV3 was steady all week at Bay Hill, posting a score that was better than the field average on all four days. That turned into a T21 finish by week's end, his fifth top 25 of the season, in 11 starts. Next up for the Charlotte resident is a trip to TPC Sawgrass. He arrives with a 3-for-4 record at the Pete Dye design (T57-T35-T7-MC). Varner ranks 27th on TOUR in strokes gained tee-to-green this season but just 119th in Par Breakers. Putting is the only thing holding him back, currently ranked 198th in One-Putt Percentage and 154th in 3-Putt Avoidance. The ECU product gained 7 strokes putting at TPC Sawgrass back in 2018, the week he finishes T7, but he's lost strokes putting in the other three visits.

Mackenzie Hughes is 2-for-2 at TPC Sawgrass and will look to keep his record flawless as he preps for this week's PLAYERS Championship.
The Canadian finished T16 in his 2017 PLAYERS debut and returned the next year to land a T57 finish. He found a hot putter in 2017 (+5 SG: Putting) and dialed in his irons in 2018 (+4.1 SG: Approach). If he can pair those up then he'll surely be in contention this week. Easier said than done, though. More recently, it's been a hot putter getting him through the week-to-week grind. He's gained 4.3 or more strokes putting in three of his last four starts. His SG:Tee-to-Green numbers have been +0.6 or worse in 10 of his last 11 measured events which makes him tough to trust in weekly leagues but he tends to deliver the goods with a steady stream of short-game skill.

Scott Brown turns his attention toward TPC Sawgrass as he readies for this week's PLAYERS Championship.
The Augusta native enters the week with a 5-for-12 record to kick off the new season. The highlight was a T24 at the Houston Open last fall while he also picked up a T30, two starts ago, at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Those remain his two top-45 finishes of the season so the results have not been steady. Brown will now take his talents to Ponte Vedra Beach for an eighth appearance at THE PLAYERS. He finishes T30 at the 2015 PLAYERS and landed a T23 during the 2018 edition while the other five finishes all landed outside of the top 60. While the end-of-week results don't jump off the page, Brown was T9 thru 36 holes of the 2014 PLAYERS and was T7 at the halfway mark the following year as well.

Past champion Sergio Garcia takes his talents back to TPC Sawgrass for an appearance at this week's PLAYERS Championship.
Garcia arrives with an 18-for-20 record at THE PLAYERS with eight of those finishes doubling as top 15s. That includes a victory during the 2008 edition, winning with a four-day tally of just 5-under 283. The Spaniard has piled up $5.4 Million over those 20 appearances which ranks No. 1 on the all-time money leaders list for this event. It's clear that he likes the course setup at TPC Sawgrass but what has he been doing lately? Garcia posted back-to-back top 15s in the Middle East before returning Stateside to miss the cut at The Genesis Invitational and followed that up with a T32 at the WGC-Workday Championship. His course history alone should put him on the radar for weekly fantasy gamers.

Playing out of the 14th-to-last twosome and playing his seventh straight week on TOUR, World No. 38 Max Homa gutted out a 1-over-par 38-35=73 in the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational to wrap on 3-under 285, climbing 12 spots to T10, eight short of champion and fellow California native Bryson DeChambeau, who fired a day-tying-low 71 out of the final twosome. 
This was the 30-year-old's second API and second top 25 after T24 last year (72-75-70-76). He improves to 10-for-13 on the season with seven top 25s, seven in his last eight starts and four consecutive, and bags his third top 10, highlighted by his second TOUR win at the Genesis two starts ago, where he outlasted Tony Finau in extra time. For the week, the UC-Berkeley alum carded laps of 70-70-72-73, tallied 14 birdies against 11 bogeys, and ranked 10th in SG: Off-the-Tee (2.548) and 1st in SG: Putting (7.890), though 57th in SG: Approach (-1.444) and 59th in SG: Around (-1.797). In the finale, he began T22 on 4-under, three short of the overnight top 10, and hit nine (of 14) fairways and just six greens in regulation. Homa lost 1.535 strokes approaching and 1.450 around-the-green, but gained 1.458 off-the-tee and posted a stellar 4.013 SG: Putting with 24 total putts. He circled four birdies at holes 1, 10, 12 (hole-out from 48'2" away) and 16, overshadowed by five bogeys at 3-5, 14 and 18, converting three conventional birdies from between eight and 63 feet, and also saving par four times from between eight and 14 feet. Homa is in the published field at this coming week's PLAYERS, where he'll make his tourney debut. He did open last year's edition with a 2-under 70 before the event was COVID-cancelled.

Playing out of the fifth-to-last twosome, first-round co-leader and past champ Rory McIlroy bumbled to a 4-over-par 39-37=76 in the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, falling three places to T10 on 3-under 285, a distant eight swings adrift of champion Bryson DeChambeau, who fired a day-tying-low 71 out of the final pairing.
The 31-year-old, a pre-tourney 8/1 fave outright, drops to 3-for-16 as an 18-hole leader/co-leader, zero for his last six. It's the sixth time this season in nine starts that he's been in the top 10 after 54 holes and is a cumulative 8-over-par in those instances come Sunday, where he's now posted rounds of 74-71-73-69-74-75, none of those resulting in anything better than a T5 (Masters). On a positive note, this was the South Florida resident's seventh API and fifth top 10, fifth consecutive, and improves to 8-for-9 on the season with eight top 25s and four top 10s, two straight after T6 at last week's WGC-Workday. For the week, he posted progressively worse rounds of 66-71-72-76, totaled 16 birdies versus 11 bogeys and one double, and ranked 12th in SG: Approach (3.764) and 14th in SG: Putting (3.702), but 46th in SG: Off-the-Tee (0.214) and 46th in SG: Around-the-Green (-0.480). In R4, the 2018 winner began T7, four back of leader Lee Westwood (73), and overshadowed three birdie-4s with five bogeys and a one-putt, double bogey-7 at 6, where he put two balls in the water off-the-tee. On eight (of 14) fairways and 11 greens in regulation, he gained 2.296 strokes approaching but lost 2.524 off-the-tee and 0.708 on-the-green with 30 total putts, saving the top-10 finish with a par-saver at the last from 9'0".

This was the 35-year-old's ninth API, sixth top 25, third straight, and fourth top 10, first since T10 in 2019. He improves to 9-for-12 on the season with five top 25s and three top 10s, two consecutive after T9 at last week's WGC-Workday. For the week, the Canadian-born American recorded laps of 68-73-69-74, and totaled 17 birdies versus nine bogeys and two doubles. He ranked 6th in SG: Off-the-Tee (3.064) and 9th in SG: Around (3.766), but 59th in SG: Putting (-1.836). On Sunday, the Xavier alum overshadowed three birdies with five bogeys on eight (of 14) fairways and 10 greens in regulation, gaining 1.566 strokes approaching and 0.221 on-the-green, but losing 0.332 off-the-tee. This is his first time recording back-to-back top-10 finishes since T2 at the 2019 Valspar, and T7 at the 2019 Valero Texas Open.

After kicking off with 71-69-69, the Georgia Tech alum began T7 on 7-under, four back of leader Lee Westwood (73) and three shy of DeChambeau. On 11 (of 14) fairways and eight greens in regulation. he gained 1.245 strokes off-the-tee, 0.148 approaching and 0.652 around-the-green. The South Florida resident circled three birdies at holes 8 (fringe-shot from 18'3"), 13 and 16, outbalanced by two squares at 4 (3-putt from 23'5") and 18, and a double bogey-5 at 17 (3-putt from 10'9"). He recorded a pedestrian 2.000 putts per GIR and 0.441 SG: Putting with 27 total putts, buoyed by five par-savers from between six and 11 feet. For the week, the Massachusetts native totaled one eagle and 15 birdies versus nine bogeys and a double, and ranked 6th in SG: Around (3.913) and 18th in SG: Putting (3.012). This is his first top 10 since his lone TOUR win at last season's opposite-field Barracuda 16 starts ago.

The Pepperdine alum has recorded back-to-back top 10s in his career before, but this is the first time he's bagged consecutive top 5s after posting rounds of 70-72-69-71. For the week, he totaled 15 birdies versus seven bogeys and a double, and ranked 5th in SG: Putting (6.102) but 61st in SG: Off-the-Tee (-0.839). On Sunday, he slightly outpaced two bogey-5s at holes 8 and 9, with three birdie-4s at 4, 6 and 16, on eight (of 14) fairways and seven greens in regulation. The Tacoma, Washington, native posted 1.714 putts per GIR and a sterling 3.273 SG: Putting with 25 total putts, highlighted by five par-savers from between six and 12 feet.

For the week, he recorded laps of 66-69, to lead by one at halftime, wrapping with 71-74, and totaled three eagles, T1 in that stat, and 12 birdies, against 10 bogeys. In R4, the South Florida resident began T2, one shy of leader Lee Westwood (73), and hit nine (of 14) fairways and 13 greens in regulation. He gained 2.476 strokes approaching and 0.237 around-the-green, but lost 0.115 off-the-tee. The Kent State alum mustered one birdie-3 at 11 and an eagle-3 at 16 (from 13'8"), overshadowed by five bogeys at 7 (missed par-saver from 37 inches), 9, 15 (3-putt from 60'6"), 17 and 18. For the week, the PGA TOUR rookie recorded rounds of 73-68-72-72, tallied one eagle and 13 birdies versus 10 bogeys and one double, and ranked 5th in SG: Tee-to-Green (8.643) but 56th in SG: Putting (-1.446). On Sunday, he began T29 on 3-under, four shy of the overnight top 10, and hit five (of 14) fairways and 11 greens in regulation. The 24-year-old lost 0.417 strokes approaching but gained 0.101 off-the-tee and 1.899 around-the-green. He was 3-under thru 16 holes, camouflaging two bogeys at 2 (3-putt from 66'5") and 3, with five birdies at 4, 5 (fringe-shot from 37'2"), 6, 11 and 16, but doubled the par-3 17th (watered tee ball) and bogeyed the last. The Wake Forest product registered 1.727 putts per GIR and 1.903 SG: Putting with 27 total putts, converting two, conventional scoring tries from between 10 and 14 feet, and also saved par two times from between five and 10 feet.
