Raiders released WR Tyrell Williams.

Two years into his four-year deal, Williams gets the pink slip after missing all of 2020 with a shoulder injury after posting a 42-651-6 line in his first year with the Silver and Black. Williams was on a first-half tear in 2019, scoring touchdowns seemingly every week before a heel injury sapped his explosiveness. Known as "The Gazelle" in his days with the Chargers because of his big-plays, deep-threat skills, Williams will now be searching for his third team as a 29-year-old. The move saves the Raiders $10.6 million against the cap.

J. Garoppolo - QB

Speaking Wednesday, 49ers GM John Lynch said "I really believe" Jimmy Garoppolo will be the team's starting quarterback in 2021.

Lynch made it sound more like he needs to upgrade the Niners' backup spot behind injury-riddled Garoppolo. “When he’s healthy, he’s played at a high level,” Lynch said. “But we probably have to add someone. We probably need to improve ourselves, so if he’s not there, we’re all right; we can win games." C.J. Beathard is a free agent, and Nick Mullens is a restricted one. The Niners went 13-3 when Garoppolo was healthy for all 16 games in 2019 and advanced to the Super Bowl. But he missed 10 games last season and has been unable to stay healthy for long stretches as a pro. There was speculation the Niners could look to move on this offseason, but Garoppolo's $26.4 million cap number isn't as bad in today's quarterback landscape.

J. Pierre-Paul - DL

Bucs OLB Jason Pierre-Paul is recovering from a knee scope.

It's a minor knee surgery in the grand scheme of things, and JPP should be fine well in time for training camp this summer. The 32-year-old appeared in all 16 games this past regular season and went on to record 9.5 sacks for the Super Bowl champs. He has one year remaining on his contract.

Chiefs RT Mitchell Schwartz (back) underwent offseason surgery.

Schwartz's back injury limited to six games last year. There was hope he could return for the playoffs, but he never got cleared. The surgery likely knocks Schwartz out for OTAs and makes him questionable for the start of training camp. Schwartz should be fully healthy for Week 1.

Impending free agent Cam Newton said he would be open to signing a one-year contract with the Patriots

Newton set career lows with the Patriots, throwing for eight touchdowns in 15 starts. His 12 rushing touchdowns were his most since 2011, but he's unlikely to be re-signed as anything other than a backup or bridge quarterback for a rookie. New England is expected to be aggressive in upgrading from Newton this offseason.

Impending free agent K.J. Wright said he won't take a discount to re-sign with the Seahawks.

“I do too much on the field to take a discount. That makes absolutely no sense,” Wright said in an appearance on the Jim Rome show. “I have a family I’m trying to set up long-term success. So that’s out of the question.” A 10-year starter, Wright remained effective in 2020, posting 86 tackles, two sacks, an interception and 11 TFLs. The 31-year-old will likely be allowed to test free agency this offseason.

Steelers President Art Rooney announced Ben Roethlisberger will return for the 2021 season.

“Ben and I met yesterday morning and we had a productive meeting,” Rooney said. “We were able to discuss a lot of things that relate to where we are and where we want to go. Ben assured me that he is committed to coming back to help us win, and I told Ben that we would like to have him back to help us win a championship. We both understand the next step is to work out Ben’s contract situation.” This was expected, though the sides still need to restructure the $41.2 million Roethlisberger is owed. The Steelers will likely convert most of Roethlisberger's 2021 salary into a signing bonus and add dummy years to spread out the cap hit.

Impending free agent JuJu Smith-Schuster said he wants to re-sign with the Steelers.

“At the end of the day, I want to have my legacy in Pittsburgh and retire there,” Smith-Schuster told TMZ. “I don’t want to leave. I’m Pittsburgh for life.” This isn't the first time Smith-Schuster has said he wants to return with the Steelers. The question is whether he's willing to accept a team-friendly deal. Pittsburgh's cap situation makes it hard to see them keeping Smith-Schuster, and it's possible they'll move forward with Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool as their top options. The Raiders and Jets are expected to have Smith-Schuster interest if the Steelers let him walk.

Bucs GM Jason Licht said “it’s a possibility” the team extends Tom Brady this offseason.

“He certainly didn’t look like he slowed down any this year," Licht said on the Rich Eisen Show. "We’ll have to see how that goes. He really had a good time this year winning the Super Bowl. Likes our organization, likes our coaches, and we certainly love him. We’d like to keep this going.” Brady is signed through next year at $25 million. He's said he wants to play until he's at least 45, so the Bucs are likely to give him a one-year extension this offseason. Tampa can also clear cap space by converting some of Brady's 2021 salary into a bonus.

Miami Herald's Barry Jackson reports there's "mutual interest" between the Dolphins and impending free agent Aaron Jones.

Miami will have roughly $26 million in cap space when the new league year begins and could easily create an additional $36 million in cap space by restructuring contracts and/or outright releasing a number of veterans. The Dolphins could also opt for the cheaper route in adding to its backfield with the No. 18 overall pick and instead allocating any excess cap to a high-end wide receiver and another cog in the front-seven — two other drastic needs. With the Jets also reportedly in on Jones, odds are the 26-year-old at the very least opens 2021 as a workhorse among his own backfield. That would also likely entail Jamaal Williams re-upping with the Packers immediately.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Steelers owner Art Rooney II is expected to announce Ben Roethlisberger's return for 2021 on Wednesday.

This firms up Tuesday words from Big Ben's agent. Roethlisberger's contract and $41.2 million 2021 cap hit need to be reworked, but it would appear neither side views that as much of an obstacle. Roethlisberger became a liability down the stretch of 2020 as his surgically-repaired throwing elbow appeared to die out, but he is the sort of player who has earned one more chance with his organization. The Steelers possess a readymade Super Bowl roster. Roethlisberger will be the weak link if he can't improve upon this winter's finish.
