Pirates sent RHP Trevor Williams outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.

It seems highly unlikely that the 28-year-old hurler will ultimately accept the outright assignment, but there has been no word of his refusal and declaration of free agency just yet. Williams posted a troublesome 6.18 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 49/21 K/BB ratio while serving up a league-leading 15 long balls in 55 1/3 innings for the Pirates during the 2020 season.

According to WEEI's Rob Bradford, rehabbing starter Chris Sale (elbow) experienced "a setback around the holidays due to neck stiffness."

The good news is that Sale has already resumed throwing on flat ground as he continues his long road to recovery from Tommy John surgery, but this neck issue helps to explain why he has not yet gotten on a mound. He had the reconstructive elbow procedure in March and probably won't be an option for the Red Sox rotation until sometime this May. The 31-year-old left-hander is under contract with the Red Sox through 2024.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that free agent right-hander Adam Wainwright "has received several competitive offers," including one from the Padres.

Goold labels the Padres' offer as "current," so it's apparently still on the table even after the club added Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, and Joe Musgrove this offseason in a series of blockbuster trades. Wainwright would presumably want to be locked into an Opening Day rotation spot wherever he lands, and San Diego might not be able to guarantee that, but perhaps he'll simply take the richest contract he can find as he enters his age-39 campaign. Wainwright pitched to an excellent 3.15 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 54/15 K/BB ratio over 65 1/3 innings with the Cardinals in 2020. He has spent all 15 years of his MLB career with St. Louis, at least up to this point.

Masahiro Tanaka has officially agreed to a contract with the Rakuten Eagles in Japan.

Even though the writing has been on the wall for weeks, this still feels like a stunning development, and a serious indictment on the current financial landscape in Major League Baseball. Unless, of course, Tanaka simply wanted to return home after a seven-year run in New York. The right-hander began his professional career with the Rakuten Eagles of Nippon Professional Baseball way back in 2007 at the age of 18. Now age 32, he posted a sharp 3.56 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 44/8 K/BB ratio in 48 innings (10 starts) last year with the Yankees.

Matz surrendered a whopping 14 home runs over 30 2/3 innings for the Mets last season. He's due for some better luck in that regard, but pitching in the AL East obviously isn't an ideal landing spot. The left-hander doesn't look like a very wise investment in mixed fantasy leagues.

Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports that the likelihood of the Angels signing Trevor Bauer is "practically zero."

Payroll limitations are one potential road block, but Torres says that the presence of pitching coach Mickey Callaway is the main reason the Angels won't be signing Bauer. Callaway was Bauer's pitching coach during their time together with the Indians from 2013-17 and they "did not get along," writes Torres, with the relationship "believed to be eroded beyond repair." Bauer famously is heavy into analytics, while Callaway is more traditional, which is why they butted heads. The Mets look like the current leader in the clubhouse to land Bauer, although nothing appears close.

Scott Mitchell of The Sports Network reports that the Blue Jays are acquiring Steven Matz from the Mets for Sean Reid-Foley, Yennsy Diaz and Josh Winckowski.

Michael Mayer of MetsMerized was first to report that Matz was close to being dealt, and now we know the landing spot. All three of the pitchers the Mets obtained are just so-so prospects, but given that Matz seemed like a non-tender candidate last month, it's a solid return. The left-hander is also a decent bounce-back candidate if he can get his home run issues under control, although landing in the AL East isn't ideal. For the Blue Jays, this could push Ross Stripling to the bullpen. For the Mets, it seemingly vaults Joey Lucchesi into the rotation, at least until the Mets get another starter (Trevor Bauer?).

Michael Mayer of MetsMerized reports that the Mets are "making traction" on a Steven Matz trade.

There's no word on what team Matz might be headed to. The timing is interesting, as there has been increasing chatter in recent days about the Mets' pursuit of Trevor Bauer. Matz is set to make $5.2 million in 2021 in his final year before free agency and is coming off an awful 2020 season which saw him post a 9.68 ERA, so it's unlikely the Mets would be getting much back in return.

Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports that the Mets' contract offer to Trevor Bauer is for "four years or less" at less than $36 million per season and contains opt-outs.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today initially reported Tuesday that the Mets' offer to Bauer was for more than Gerrit Cole's record $36 million AAV, but there have now been multiple reports disputing that. Bauer is on the record as being open to any type of contract, so a deal with opt-outs where he has some control would figure to be appealing to him. That said, it seems likely at this point that he's not going to land the kind of money he sought at the beginning of the offseason.
