"When I left the Islanders, they told me the way to get more games, more minutes was to improve my skating," Koivula said. "Playing center in a European rink is a lot harder than in a North American rink, to be honest. A lot more skating, more defense. So I think it’s really good for me to do this and I’m playing pretty well." He notched nine goals and 22 points in 36 matches with Bridgeport of the AHL last season. Koivula didn't have a point in 12 outings with the Islanders in 2019-20, but he hopes playing in Europe before training camp will put him in a better position to try to earn an NHL roster spot.

With Pierre-Luc Dubois acquired by the Jets, the big question now is when he'll be eligible to play for them.

In a normal season, it would just be a question of how long it would take him to fly from Columbus to Winnipeg - or wherever the Jets happened to be at that time - but of course this isn't a normal season. After traveling to Canada, he'll need to go through quarantine and it's not clear how long that will last. The Jets are hoping that the modified, shorter quarantine rules used during training camp can also be used during the regular season, but that remains to be seen. In other words, it's not yet known when Dubois will make his Jets debut.

Devils coach Lindy Ruff wanted to make a change and that helped motivate him to give Merkley a shot. “We’re going to have Merkley going in," Ruff said. "We’ve got a lot of hockey coming up. Didn’t like the way we played in the Island, so we made a couple changes.” Merkley had four goals and 13 points in 19 contests with Assat Pori of SM-liiga in 2020-21 before the NHL campaign started.
