According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets will be present for the free agent showcase featuring Julio Teheran and Anibal Sanchez on Tuesday in Miami.

Even after adding Joey Lucchesi from the Padres on Monday, the Mets are still looking to pad their rotation depth. Teheran, 29, registered a brutal 10.05 ERA and 20/16 K/BB ratio over 31 1/3 innings (nine starts, one relief appearance) last season with the Angels and will presumably have to settle for an incentive-driven one-year deal for 2021. Sanchez, 36, had a 6.62 ERA and 43/18 K/BB ratio in 53 innings last year with the Nationals.

ESPN's Jeff Passan confirms that the Nationals have signed Jon Lester to a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2022.

There's no word yet on the financial terms of the agreement, but those should be revealed shortly. Lester will slot into the Nats' rotation behind Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, and Patrick Corbin as he looks to bounce back from the disappointing 5.16 ERA he posted in the final year of his six-year, $155 million deal with the Cubs. The veteran lefty probably shouldn't be counted on for useful fantasy production in his age-37 campaign.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Padres are still trying to re-sign Jurickson Profar.

Padres GM A.J. Preller simply refuses to take a day off, and good for him. This offseason has presented a great opportunity for the few teams in Major League Baseball actively trying to improve. Profar put up a decent .278/.343/.428 batting line with seven home runs and seven stolen bases over 56 games last year for San Diego while appearing defensively at second base, first base, and all three outfield spots.

Jon Lester is "in talks" with the Nationals, per Ken Rosenthal and Jon Greenberg of The Athletic.

Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times adds that the two sides are "closing in on a deal" and that it's "headed toward the finish line." Lester struggled to a 5.16 ERA in 61 innings (12 starts) last season with the Cubs, who then declined his $25 million option for 2021. The 37-year-old left-handed starter is probably nothing more than a depth piece at this point in his career, but the Nats could certainly use that depth.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reports that the Padres have acquired right-hander Joe Musgrove from the Pirates.

It will be a three-team, seven-player swap once all of the medical reviews are completed, with the Pirates getting OF prospect Hudson Head, LHP prospect Omar Cruz, RHP prospect Drake Fellows, and reliever David Bednar from the Friars. Joey Lucchesi, meanwhile, is headed to the Mets in exchange for 1B/OF/C prospect Endy Rodriguez. Musgrove registered a solid 3.86 ERA, 1.235 WHIP, and 55/16 K/BB ratio over 39 2/3 innings (eight starts) during the condensed 2020 season and will now join a beefed-up San Diego rotation that also features fellow offseason additions Blake Snell and Yu Darvish. The 28-year-old Musgrove avoided arbitration with the Bucs last week on a one-year, $4.45 million contract. He is under club control through 2022.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Dodgers have considered free agent Marcus Semien for their opening at third base.

This could be a bit of a negotiating ploy as the Dodgers continue to discuss terms with Justin Turner. Semien hasn't played third base since back in 2014 with the White Sox and he struggled to a .223/.305/.374 batting line over 236 plate appearances with the Athletics in 2020. He did, however, enjoy the best year of his career in 2019. The 30-year-old infielder has also been connected to the Phillies, Reds, Red Sox, and A's.

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that Dustin Pedroia is "not planning a comeback" and a "resolution" with the Red Sox could come this month.

Pedroia's status came into question Monday with infield prospect C.J. Chatham being traded to the Phillies, as he remains on the team's 40-man roster despite appearing in just nine games since the end of the 2017 season due to knee issues. It was reported in late October that the Red Sox and Pedroia were scheduled to "talk about a mutual understanding that would end his playing career," but it's unclear where those talks stand. Given Pedroia's importance to the franchise, they'll obviously handle this situation with the utmost sensitivity. Pedroia is still owed $12.125 million for the 2021 season.

According to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Red Sox plan to be conservative with Chris Sale's return from Tommy John surgery.

Sale still has four guaranteed years remaining on his five-year, $145 million contract, so the Red Sox are thinking about the long-term. The southpaw underwent Tommy John surgery last March 30 and he appears to be on track to return on the long end of the projected 12-15 month timetable. Assuming that's the way things play out, Sale will mostly be a factor in the second half. This latest report isn't really changing anything.

Jon Morosi of MLB.com reports that Nelson Cruz has "ongoing interest" from multiple teams in both the American League and National League.

Morosi reports that he heard the same thing regarding Marcell Ozuna last week. There's been some uncertainty about whether there will be a universal designated hitter again in 2021, but this would seem to indicate that teams believe it will happen. Still, we suspect his market will have more clarity once there's something official on the matter. It's rather crazy that we don't know that yet and it's undoubtedly contributed to this slow offseason. Ownership probably doesn't mind at all.

The move clears a spot for the newly-acquired C.J. Chatham on the 40-man roster. Arano had elbow surgery in 2019 and didn't pitch last year after coming down with shoulder problems, but he posted a promising 2.73 ERA over 60 appearances in 2018. He should draw some interest, assuming he's healthy.

Chatham, 26, slashed .298/.333/.408 with five home runs and seven stolen bases in 110 games between the Double-A and Triple-A levels in 2019. He was added to Boston's 40-man roster that fall and has a chance to stick as a utility infielder-type. Dave Dombrowski was apparently a fan from his time in Boston.

Jon Morosi of MLB.com reports that free agent outfielder George Springer could make a decision this week on where to sign.

Buckle up. Morosi cites "multiple industry sources" and names the Blue Jays and Mets are the two frontrunners at the moment. In other words, nothing has really changed over the past few weeks. The one thing that has changed is the Mets' addition of Francisco Lindor. He's set to make $22.3 million this year and the Mets would surely like to extend him, so it's unclear if they want to make another major investment with Michael Conforto, Noah Syndergaard, and Marcus Stroman all due to be free agents next offseason. They could turn to Jackie Bradley, Jr. instead. The Blue Jays have yet to make a big name this offseason despite being connected to several top names. This could be their best chance. There was a recent report suggesting that Springer would prefer to be close to his home state of Connecticut, but we suspect the money will matter most in the end.
