With the defensive side of the Lightning's bench often crowded, backup goaltender Curtis McElhinney taken to helping out the video coaches instead.

The Lightning tend to dress seven defensemen and 11 forwards, which is why there's not a lot of room for McElhinney. He hasn't gotten any ice time in the 2020 playoffs, so he's been contributing in other ways. “The defensive side of the bench was congested, so I decided to sit in the coach’s room watching for offsides,” laughed McElhinney. “I watch for every potential offside that I can, but I make sure to leave the final decision to our coaches — that’s their job, but I make sure I’m the first one to greet the guys in the hallway when they come back during intermission.” McElhinney has enjoyed being a part of the Lightning's run to the Stanley Cup Final. He knows his role. He's been all around the league serving as a backup goaltender, helping out in practices, serving as a "cheerleader" as he put it, and doing what you can in the locker room. Lightning coach Jon Cooper praised McElhinney for being a "character guy" and a source of support for Andrei Vasilevskiy on and off the ice. If the Lightning end up winning the Stanley Cup, McElhinney won't be one of the first guys cited as key factors, but he's made a contribution all the same. Sep 25 9:21 am (EST)
