Tanner Houck recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts over six innings on Saturday in a win over the Braves.
Houck authored the most dominant start of his young career, generating an eye-popping 16 swinging strikes (including 10 whiffs on 17 swings against his slider) across six stellar frames. He carried a shutout into the fifth inning before giving up a solo homer to Dansby Swanson, which represented the lone tally against him in this one. He gave up only three hits and also issued three walks. The 24-year-old righty has some control issues to iron out, but he showed some extremely-bright flashes of mixed-league relevance in his brief major-league debut. Frankly, it’s stunning the Red Sox didn’t give him an opportunity earlier in the year. He should be in line to compete for a permanent rotation spot next spring after finishing the abbreviated 2020 campaign with a microscopic 0.53 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 21/9 K/BB ratio across 17 innings (three starts).
