Astros signed C Martin Maldonado to a one-year, $5 million contract extension with a vesting option for 2023.

The agreement was first reported by MLB.com's Mark Feinsand back on April 13 and announced by the team on Wednesday. The delay may have been related to Maldonado's stint on the COVID-19 injured list. He returned to action on Tuesday night at Colorado and is now officially locked in for at least another season.

Myles Straw is absent from the Astros' starting lineup on Wednesday.

Astros manager Dusty Baker told reporters Tuesday that Straw was feeling some side effects from his second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. He went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Houston's 6-2 loss to the Rockies and will now grab a little bit of rest during Wednesday afternoon's series finale at Coors Field.

David Dahl is not in the Rangers' starting lineup Wednesday versus the Angels.

Willie Calhoun and Brock Holt are also sitting with the Rangers facing left-hander Jose Quintana. Eli White, Leody Taveras, and Joey Gallo will start across the outfield in the matinee game at Angel Stadium.

Orioles recalled OF Ryan McKenna from their alternate training site.

McKenna was just optioned out on Tuesday afternoon, but he will return to the O's active roster -- and their starting lineup -- for Wednesday's game against the Marlins with Anthony Santander (ankle) landing on the 10-day injured list. McKenna, 24, stands 2-for-10 with four strikeouts in 11 games played this year at the MLB level.

Evan Longoria is getting the day off Wednesday versus the Phillies.

Longoria has been excellent so far this season, slashing .291/.361/.582 with four home runs and four doubles through 16 games, but he'll grab a breather as the Giants wrap up a three-game set in Philadelphia. Tommy La Stella is playing third base and batting leadoff Wednesday afternoon against right-hander Zach Eflin. Donovan Solano is at second base and Wilmer Flores is filling in for Brandon Belt (quad) at first base.

Drew Smith (shoulder) threw live batting practice on Wednesday morning.

There's still no public timetable on Smith as he recovers from a right shoulder issue, but he is now doing live mound work at the Mets' spring training complex and could soon head to the team's alternate training site. The 28-year-old might be an option for the bullpen in Queens sometime in early-to-mid May.

Orioles placed OF Anthony Santander on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain.

Santander suffered the injury on Tuesday night as he retreated back to the first base bag on a pickoff attempt and is expected to be sidelined for the next 2-4 weeks. The good news is that X-rays and a subsequent MRI both ruled out any structural damage. Baltimore will announce a corresponding roster move shortly.
