Early season baseball is in full swing, but it hasn’t been without it’s hiccups. Monday’s Red Sox/Orioles game has been postponed. Adjust lineups accordingly. Six games were postponed yesterday, which will make for a lot of double header this week and in the future, which is something to monitor especially in weekly and H2H formats.

Things That Make You Go “Hmmmm…”

Dinelson Lamet will undergo Tommy John surgery. Lamet hurt his elbow a few weeks ago, but the injury was first seen as one that wouldn’t keep him out super long. Now he is done for the season and potentially done as a fantasy asset. Lamet is a two-pitch pitcher and the main reason he was getting an opportunity to start was because the options were bare for the Padres. This injury could potentially send him to the bullpen long-term as the Padres stacked minor leagues could begin to arrive in the next few seasons.

Luiz Gohara will make his first start in AAA as he rehabs from an injured ankle. Gohara wouldn’t have likely made the opening day roster from the Braves, but he could be up in short order once he is ready. While the surface numbers weren’t great in his MLB debut, Gohara looked really impressive with a plus fastball and slider.

Alex Cobb made his first start of the season and gone blown up. He gave up eight runs in 3.2 innings and stuck out zero batters. While he threw his changeup 20% of the time, it has not returned to being the same pitch it was prior to him getting thoracic outlet surgery. Cobb is only viable in AL Only formats and even that is pushing it at this point.

According to Johnny Cueto , he believes he can be activated and should be ready to pitch on Tuesday when he is eligible to return. This is great news for fantasy owner and the SF Giants. You can put him back into your weekly lineups and may get a 2-start week this week.

Chris Archer was torched for seven runs in four innings on Saturday. Archer struggled with a tough Phillies lineup and was replaced early in the game. This has not been a banner start to the season for Archer, but he has been consistently good over his career. There isn’t much in the underlying numbers to be super concerned about, so he looks to be a nice buy-low opportunity.

Christian Yelich was not ready to be activated from the DL on Sunday. Manager Craig Counsell said that Yelich has been ramping up activity, but that the Brewers would not activate him until he is 100%. While he isn’t quite ready to be activated, he appears to be on track to return soon.

Joey Lucchesi struck out nine in his start Sunday versus the Giants. He has started off his career extremely well, with a 1.66 ERA and a 29.8% strikeout rate. In spite of the great start, Lucchesi does not have overpowering stuff and relies more on deception. He mostly throws two pitches that are great. This appears to be mostly smoke and mirrors and regression is likely coming.

Sean Manaea was great once again versus the Mariners. He made just one mistake that resulted in a Taylor Motter home run, but other than that he kept Seattle off balance with a good mix of his fastball and off speed stuff. He is get swings and misses outside of the zone, but it hasn’t yet registered in terms on his strikeout rate. He looks like he is primed for a breakout.

What We’ll Be Watching Today

– Will any other games be postponed? This has been a rough start to the year. For DFS (and season long players) I recommend following Kevin Roth on twitter for weather updates.

– German Marquez starting at Pittsburgh. Marquez got blown up in his second start of the year, but rebounded nicely in his last start. Pitching at PNC should help a lot, but he needs to go deeper into games to be fantasy viable.

– Will Ronald Guzman be in the lineup? Guzman made his MLB debut this weekend and hit a home run in the process. The question will be is he just going to be a platoon player or full-time? Lefty Blake Snell is on the mound, so this is the first time we will get to see what the Rangers plan is for him.

– Can Luis Castillo become an ace? Castillo started off rough, but rebounded a bit in his last start. He gets a Brewers lineup that will likely be without Ryan Braun , Christian Yelich , and Eric Thames .

– How good is Ozzie Albies ? He has been fantastic to start off his first full season in the Majors, but gets a tough matchup of Aaron Nola . He is hitting .313/.333/.703 with five home runs and a stolen base in 14 games played.

– Can Luis Severino rebound? Severino got blown up in his last start, but playing the Marlins should help what ails him.

– How good is Reynaldo López ? The results have been good so far, but he continues to walk way too many batters. I have been impressed with the stuff so far and he has done a good job of limiting homers. He gets an A’s team that is heavy right-handed and Lopez has an impressive .036 batting average against him versus right-handers.

– Baseball. Lots of baseball.
