Giants manager Gabe Kapler told reporters on Friday that he expects Johnny Cueto will miss two starts due to his injured lat.

The veteran right-hander was officially placed on the 10-day injured list on Thursday. It sounds like the club is hopeful that it's only a minor issue though and that Cueto should be able to rejoin the rotation after missing near the minimum possible time on the injured list. Taking Kapler at his word -- and assuming no setbacks along the way -- that would put Cueto back on the mound right at the beginning of May.

McGowin holds a career 7.05 ERA over 23 appearances for the Nats. He'll be used in middle relief.

Nationals placed LHP Luis Avilan on the 10-day injured list with left elbow inflammation.

Avilan threw 38 pitches Tuesday and 39 Thursday, so it's no surprise he's not feeling right physically. Kyle McGowin will take his spot in the bullpen.

With the designated hitter spot not available for the Indians' series in Cincinnati, it's possible Reyes might be limited to pinch-hitting duty all weekend. He is capable of playing the outfield, of course, but hasn't done so yet this season and did so just once in 2020.

Ender Inciarte departed Friday's game against the Cubs with a left hamstring injury.

Inciarte pulled his hamstring as he was running the bases in the fourth inning. The Braves are already without Cristian Pache (groin), so their center field depth is being tested. Guillermo Heredia could take over as the primary center fielder if Inciarte is out a while, or it's possible they could move Ronald Acuña Jr. to center and use someone else in right.
