Jose Abreu hit a homer in his first game of 2015. I got called out for not mentioning that in a column Monday. My response - there are hundreds upon hundreds of players and I simply can't write about everyone. I will say this though. If you count the 19 games he played in Spring Training Abreu's hit two homers in his last 20 games. He also hit a total of seven homers his last 63 games last year. That gives him a total of nine homers his last 83 big league games. Just something to think about.

Chris Davis has been activated from the DL after having completed his 25 game suspension from last season. For more on Davis see his Player Profile.

Brandon Guyer is going to bat leadoff against lefties and so he is Tuesday against Wei-Yin Chen. The 29 year old outfielder has hit .288 with a .354 OBP against lefties in his career (130 plate appearances). He's only hit two homers though with one steal so it's not like he's a dynamic option or anything.

Dallas Keuchel blanked the Indians for seven innings in his first start. Great outing. Don't buy filly in. Not enough strikeouts, but a huge ground ball rate will likely keep him in games.

Jenrry Mejia has been placed on the DL with elbow inflammation. For my thoughts on the Mets 9th inning situation, as well as that of the Dodgers, see the April 7th version of Daily Trends.

I went to the eye doctor this morning The good news is that my eyes haven't changed in three years. The bad news is that I'm having a hard time focusing on words after having my eyes dilated. Maybe a Maker's Mark would stabilize things?

Rick Porcello got $82.5 million over four years from the Red Sox. Preposterous. I love the fanboy support from the Red Sox faithful, but let's be honest. What the hell? I mean, seriously. Porcello is 26 years old and a solid big league hurler, but this is bonkers-stupid. (1) He's pitched six years. (2) He's had ONE season of 185 innings. (2) He's had one season with a K/9 rate over 5.70. (3) He has ONE season with an ERA under 3.90. (4) He has a 1.36 WHIP for his career and only twice in six years has the mark been under 1.30 - a league average number by the way. Porcello will never be a star in the fantasy game because he doesn't strike folks out. In the real world... how could anyone say that signing Porcello was smarter than giving James Shields four years and $73 million? The Sox cannot afford Cole Hamels either apparently. He's due $112.5 million the next five years. That's $22.5 million a year for Hamels, $18.3 for Shields and $20.6 million for Porcello. Way to go Red Sox.

Travis Snider hit 5th Opening Day but now that Chris Davis is back the Orioles have decided to push Snider up to third in the order against righty Nate Karns. That gives the Orioles the following lineup: Alejandro De Aza, Steve Pearce, Travis Snider, Adam Jones, Chris Davis, Manny Machado, Ryan Flaherty, Caleb Joseph and Everth Cabrera. Matt Wieters (elbow) and J.J. Hardy (shoulder) are on the DL and things will change when they return, but this setup, if it holds against righties, will certainly give Snider a nice short-term boost. Still, history doesn't suggest that Snider will be able to take advantage. In more than 1,400 plate appearances against righties in his career his slash line is decidedly boring (.246/.313/.408).

Yasmany Tomas is in the minors, despite signing a $68 million deal with the Diamondbacks. The D'backs don't quite seem to know how to handle his glove, so look for him to be used at multiple defensive spots. "Our intent is when he's back here is to get him as many at-bats as we can and have him be a part of our lineup and be an impact in our lineup," GM Dave Stewart said. Sounds like he will see time at third and the outfield at Triple-A. If Jake Lamb does well at third, he had a 3-run RBI double in Game 1, it might be Tomas to the outfield (given the early returns on his defense at the hot corner that's likely the best course of action). If he does indeed see time in the outfield things will get crowded awfully fast. Have to think Mark Trumbo and A.J. Pollock play daily meaning that Tomas would be battling David Peralta and Ender Inciarte for work in left field. Hopefully you didn't invest too heavily in Tomas this offseason. See Jeff Mans Prospect Report.

Koji Uehara threw 30 pitches Tuesday and his hammy felt good. He should be ready to go in about a week, baring another setback. The 40 year old is risky as his body is starting to betray him, but when healthy he is still a force on the bump. Edward Mujica continues to be the short term play.

Stephen Vogt had a homer Opening Day. In 433 career at-bats he's hit .256 with 14 homers, 54 RBIs and 46 runs scored. Could end up being a solid second catcher in mixed leagues.
