DFS PGA PLAYBOOK - FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN
Published: Jan 25, 2017
Lets give it up for the Georgia Boy, Hudson Swafford on his first career PGA Tour victory. The dude breaks through at the age of 29 and we can only hope this is the start of something special for him. He'll have another chance to make his mark at one of the most storied courses on the PGA Tour, Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open.
Torrey Pines is a 36-hole municipal public golf facility owned by the city of San Diego, California. It sits on the coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean in the community of La Jolla, just south of Torrey Pines State Reserve. It hosted the 2008 U.S. Open which was the last time Tiger Woods won a Major Championship.
Speaking of Tigers Woods, he's back! This is the first time he's teed it up in a full field PGA Tour event in over a year. He knows how to pick his events because Tiger basically grew up on this course. He has also won on this track a record seven times, six of which came at the Farmers Insurance Open. You will not see him in my playbook because I'm not interested in owning him at all this weekend. Tiger finished 15th in a 17 man field at last month's Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. Of course, I'd love to see the guy touch greatness once again but I just don't feel that it's in the cards. Feel free to plug him in if you wish, but I'm fading the man.
You also won't see Phil in my playbook either. He does love Torrey Pines with three titles under his belt but Phil hasn't had much success recently. Just one made cut (T51 in 2013) in his last five trips. He did play well last week at the CareerBuilder with a T21 but I'm choosing to avoid him as well.
Back to the Farmers Insurance, this tournament is played over two courses. The players will play both Torrey Pines (North) & Torrey Pines (South) once each on Thursday and Friday, then they will play the South course twice over the weekend. The North course measures out to only 7,258 yards and is a Par 72. The South course ranked as the second toughest course on tour last year and stretches out 7,698 yards. These players have to stay as close to par or under on the South course and then strike on the shorter North course to make the weekend. All players will miss fairways this week, so you can play your bombers. You should be targeting players who hit greens especially from the rough. The rough is going to even tougher this week with all the rain that has fallen in Southern California over the past few weeks. The greens are poa annua which basically means that no putt is safe, no matter the distance but some players thrive on them.
And finally, no article would be completely without a visit from Paige. It was a struggle last week as Ryan Palmer and Cameron Tringale missed the cut, essentially destroying my cash lineup. Just remember that the DFS PGA season is a grind and we're only just getting started ...
