Now that we’ve talked about the offensive players, it’s time to focus our attention to the top defensive units for this opening weekend. As we all know, special teams is factored in as well, so placing a dynamic return man on top of a plus matchup is going to be lucrative. There are some good matchups out there, but for the sake of this piece, we’re going to cut it off at the top 5. The sixth man may be a big factor in the NBA, but there’s no room for a sixth man here in the Top 5 article!

Seattle DST vs. MIA

The Seattle defense is very good, obviously, we all know that. Arian Foster and Jay Ajayi both looked lackluster this offseason and if they can’t get the ball moving on the ground, they are going to have a hard time beating Seattle through the air. This unit is always a threat for a return touchdown thanks to the dynamic Tyler Lockett.

Houston DST vs. CHI

J.J. Watt is healthy and he alone puts this fantasy unit on the map. Jadeveon Clowney has also looked exceptional and this unit as a whole will wreak havoc for the Chicago offense. Also, Chicago has the walking bakery under center (Jay Cutler), so you can expect at least a couple of turnovers in this one. Also, Tyler Ervin will continue to develop as an electrifying return man, adding to the aura of this unit.

Kansas City DST vs. SD

Over the past two years, San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers has just two touchdowns against this Kansas City defense, throwing five interceptions during that span. The Chiefs may be without some of their better pass rushers, but their secondary should keep the San Diego wide receivers in check on Sunday.

Los Angeles Rams DST @ SF

The Rams have a very good defense and they draw a Week 1 matchup with Blaine Gabbert. Blaine freakin’ Gabbert! This is going to be a ground-and-pound type of game where points will be out of a premium. Expect quite a few sacks and a couple of turnovers from the Rams DST.

Arizona DST vs. NE

Jimmy Garoppolo will make his first career start against a stout Arizona defense that feasts on turnovers. From the D-line to the return man, this DST is loaded and they will put up some points against the Tom Brady-less New England Patriots.

@colbyrconway on Twitter, you know the deal by now.
