With the wife stuck at work for most of the evening, what better way to spend a Friday night than throwing down $19.95 and doing a Draft Masters Best Ball League on RT Sports? If you haven’t tried it out yet, it’s obviously super-easy. It’s best ball. It’s the 9-ball of fantasy football. All you have to do is draft. You can be the laziest f*** in the world and still take two hours out of your day/night to picks players for 20 rounds.

The rules and scoring are pretty basic for fantasy football so there are no crazy surprises here. It’s a 10-team PPR format with starting positions of 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex (R/W/T), 1 DEF and 1 kicker. I figured I would treat this as a regular draft, load up on some running backs and wide receivers and grab my usual cast of characters. I made a few alterations along the way, but overall, I’m pretty happy with this roster.

Full Draft Board

My Team

QB: Ben Roethlisberger, Derek Carr

So here was my wacky move. I probably should have just gone with one QB midway through the draft and then go for a lower-ranked buy, to pair him with, but with best ball, I figured what the hell. Why not just grab two at the level I like and not worry if a late-round grab pans out. The fact that I don’t have to decide who to start each week makes this move look slightly less stupid.

RB: Le'Veon Bell, Dalvin Cook, Carlos Hyde, Duke Johnson, Robert Kelley, Wendell Smallwood

Bell was the no-brainer grab (even though I might be a tad nervous about soft tissue injuries and this holdout) and then I took my boy Dalvin a little early for a 10-teamer but I didn’t see him coming back my way with all the helium being blown up his ADP right now. I figured it was between him and Hyde and given the slight concerns people have over Joe Williams and Tim Hightower, I figured I’d take my chances and see if he came back my way. Obviously, he did and I could not be happier.

The support team is pretty solid, in my opinion. Duke is going to work a ton out of the slot, Kelley has the job right now and Samaje Perine looks like he’s falling behind with each passing practice and Smallwood is going to find his way into this disgusting mix the Eagles call a backfield. I’m covered for the bye weeks and there’s definitely some noteworthy upside here.

WR: Amari Cooper, Golden Tate, DeVante Parker, Rishard Matthews, Adam Thielen, Torrey Smith

My focus is usually skewed towards the running backs, but with Cooper staring at me in the second round, I figured I should grab him (yes, with the intent that Derek Carr would be my quarterback). From there I went PPR-strong with solid TD-upside. In best ball, it’s not so imperative to get the elite receiver since so many times, it can be a crapshoot as to who is going to have the big week. Everyone I have is either the WR1 or 2 on their team and I should easily stay competitive with this group.

TE: Zach Ertz, Austin Hooper

I’ve been seeing Ertz fall in a bunch of mock drafts to like the 7th or 8th round so I figured, why not? He’s going to see a ton of targets from Carson Wentz this year and should also see some solid red zone looks as well. He averaged for just over 10 targets per game over his last seven in 2016, so I’m hoping he builds off that. If not, then my man Hooper is obviously going to do the heavy lifting for me and I am totally fine with that.

DEF: Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills

That’s four games against the New York Jets I’ve got locked down. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

K: New Orleans Saints, Los Angeles Chargers

Do kickers matter? Nope. But if you have to take one (and in this case, it’s the team kicker, not the individual), well then grab guys in domes and guys who kick in beautiful weather. The Saints and Chargers check both those boxes and a third when you also consider high-scoring offenses.

So there you go, folks. That’s how it ended up for me. Again, I’m pretty happy with this group and feel very good about going to war with it in a best ball format. Of course, I’m going to join another one on Saturday and see what it might look like from a different spot than drafting out of the two-hole.
