For fantasy baseball owners, the Arizona Diamondbacks have been one of the most prolific teams in MLB this season. Paul Goldschmidt is an elite, power-hitting first baseman, Zack Greinke is having one of the finest seasons of his career at age-33, Jake Lamb is crushing home runs from the hot corner and the entire team has been both aggressive and successful on the bases, as they rank fifth overall in the majors with 69 steals. From the aforementioned superstars to successful role-players like Chris Owings and David Peralta, the team is laden with talent and booming statistics the fantasy community covets every day.

But just when fantasy owners thought it couldn’t get any better, Arizona GM Mike Hazen went out and added more power and potential run production when he traded for Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez. The Diamondbacks have 121 home runs with 458 RBI, good for seventh and fourth, respectively, in the National League and now they add a bat that has already delivered 16 homers and 39 RBI in just 58 games this season. The fangs on these snakes just got bigger and sharper.

Fantasy owners can get excited about Martinez’ move as he leaves pitcher-friendly Comerica Park and now gets to call the bandbox known as Chase Field home. His hard-contact rate has gone way up this season, he’s been spraying the ball to all fields and seven of his 16 home runs have gone to the opposite field. He’s gone from protecting a declining Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez to hitting behind both Goldschmidt and Lamb so you know he’s going to see plenty of pitches to hit. An uptick in production is easily expected.

The rest of the lineup should also reap major benefits from his arrival. The opposition won’t be able to pitch around Goldschmidt or Lamb as much and the bottom of the order should see more RBI opportunities. Even if Martinez clears the bases for them, they’ll just have more room to get even more aggressive on the bases and provide better RBI opportunities for leadoff-hitter A.J. Pollock.

And the run support for the pitchers? Come on. This deal not only puts the Diamondbacks into strong contention for the NL pennant, it puts those fantasy players who own them in a much better spot to surge in the second half and grab that brass ring in the end.
