We’re at Texas for the first time this season, just a few months later than normal, making our second 1.5-mile track in a row. Typically, Texas is one of the fastest intermediate tracks on the schedule but it’s also one in which drivers can move up here with at least 14 drivers a race last year moving up at least five spots and four or five moving up double-digit spots in each as well.
This is a track where the sets of corners are banked at two different steepnesses with the first set being shallower than the second and thus making the speed down the front stretch a tough thing to manage heading into Turn 1. Tire wear will be a bit of an issue here but not as much as it is at Atlanta which is a similar shaped track.
This track has been pretty evenly split between all manufacturers in the last 10 races as you can see in the image above. Ford and Chevy are mainly due to one driver each in that span with Harvick and Johnson leading the way for each respectively.

There have been 38 Cup races run at Texas and like most 1.5-mile tracks, starting closer to the front has been beneficial for winning. Though it’s been more welcoming to those starting further back than others in that five winners have come from outside the top-20 and seven have come from outside the top-15.
Core Drivers By Tier
Tier 1 - Kevin Harvick
I get this is old hat but Harvick has been dominant here and lately
He’s won three of the last five races here and hasn’t done it all by starting up front either
A perfect Driver rating is 150 and Harvick has a 124.3 mark in the last four races which is by far the best in the field.
Tier 2 - Erik Jones
Jones has six races at Texas under his belt and five of those have been top-10s including three P4s.
He’s made up five spots a race on average here and recently has been showing top-end speed again.
Jones is in the top-five for average Driver Rating at a 102.4 over the last four races.
Tier 3 - Michael McDowell
Michael is a great PD play most weeks but especially at 1.5-mile tracks this year.
In the last four races at Texas he’s averaged a 20.8 finish and now he’s starting P34
He’s got two top-15 finishes in the last four races here and it is his home track
Contrarian Play - William Byron
He’s shown top-10 speed a few different races in the last five races this season
He’s got back-to-back top-10 finishes at Texas last year in this package
Byron has been flying a bit under-the-radar recently but in the last two 1.5-mile tracks he has two top-11 finishes.
Fade - Brad Keselowski
Keselowski has gone backward quite a bit here with an average finish of 30.4 in the last four races
He’s posted a 20.4 average finish in the last eight races here with just two top-10s.
On both sites he’s been terrible from a value perspective with less than 2x value on both sites in the last two races and on DK in the last five.
