Week 4 of the season offered some intriguing match-ups and some high-scoring games. A game doesn’t have to be high-scoring to have a lot of Red Zone chances though so some of the guys you see on the list, won’t have been part of the scoreboard fireworks shows that happened in Week 4.

Red Zone Passing Attempts

Aaron Rodgers , QB GB – The Thursday Night Football game last week proved to be one of the better ones in a while with a showdown between the Packers and Eagles. Rodgers used that game to showoff his prowess in Red Zone offense with 15 passing attempts and two touchdowns inside the 20. The previous three games saw Rodgers have nine total passing attempts in the Red Zone and granted the offense has been switching to more of a balanced approach, but Rodgers has been trying to win the power struggle to pass more, and he got that chance last Thursday. His seven throws inside the 10 elevates him to a tie for first in the league with 11 total on the year but on the season he’s still under 50-percent completion percentage overall.

Patrick Mahomes , QB KC – Mahomes is making a second appearance in this piece, and why shouldn’t he? He had a double-digit attempt week against Detroit with 10 and two rushes. He is tied for the league lead in overall passing attempts at 27 inside the 20 yard line. It’s his second 10 attempt week but all of those attempts have only produced three touchdowns and this week snapped his streak of passing touchdowns, as he didn’t have one despite the team putting up as many points as they did.

Carson Wentz , QB PHI – Wentz needed a big game going against Aaron Rodgers and stiff Packers defense and that’s exactly what he delivered. He threw it seven times and put up three touchdowns while carrying the ball twice inside the Red Zone. While it was an effective game for him, there was a noticeable player absent from the action in Zach Ertz who didn’t have a target all night long. Wentz has been effective this year completing over 57-percent of his passes with five touchdowns inside the 20 while upping the completion rate to 60-percent inside the 10.

Chase Daniel , QB CHI – Daniel had to come in for the injured Mitch Trubisky early in the first quarter against the Vikings and led his team competently to a victory. In the process, Daniel he attempted seven Red Zone passes completing four of them with one going for a score. It’s not a flashy stat line but it’s something to build off of heading to London in Week 5 to take on the Raiders as Trubisky will be out for a few more weeks at least with the dislocated shoulder. Daniel does have weapons around him that can make this offense unpredictable in the Red Zone and gets a softer defense this week as Oakland is allowing teams to score at a nearly 54-percent clip inside the 20 so far.

Red Zone Rushing Attempts

Darrell Williams , RB KC – LeSean McCoy may have returned for the Chiefs despite the ankle injury, however it was Williams that made the most of the Red Zone work on Sunday. Williams toted the rock four times, compared to McCoy’s six, but he scored two touchdowns including the game winner with just a few ticks left on the clock from one-yard out. It will continue to be a running back by committee approach in Kansas City that will only get muddier when Damien Williams returns but Darrell Williams has been effective in his role to this point so he could continue to see Red Zone work as he is now even when it’s a three-headed backfield.

Jordan Howard , RB PHI – Howard was the big bruising back in the Chicago backfield last year and when he was traded to the Eagles in the offseason, the move made sense since Howard had more Red Zone carries last year than all Philadelphia running backs combined. This week that usage was evident as he was a major force for the Eagles as they went into Lambeau and won. He carried the ball six times inside the 20 producing two touchdowns and even snagged a catch for a Red Zone score as well. Prior to this week he had just five total Red Zone carries while Miles Sanders had appeared to be the lead back in goal line work, but that flipped this week further adding confusion for fantasy owners as to who exactly is going to get work when each week, much like it’s been for the last few seasons.

Nick Chubb , RB CLE – Chubb was a workhorse on Sunday in Baltimore as the Browns put all of the doubters behind them, at least for a week, and put up a 40-spot on the road. He carried it four times for two of his three touchdowns inside the 20 as part of his huge day. Chubb was taken as an RB1 on draft day and despite the slower start to the year, he’s starting to round into that RB1 form he was expected to be heading into the season. Cleveland gets to travel to San Francisco for a date on Monday Night Football in Week 5 and so far, the 49ers defense has been stouter than it was believed to be as they’ve only allowed 75 rushing yards a game and given up two Red Zone scores in the eight trips they’ve allowed.

Leonard Fournette , RB JAC – This is the Fournette folks were wanting in the preseason when they drafted him to be a top RB option for them in fantasy. He had monster of a day on Sunday with 225 yards on the ground. Amongst the 29 carries he had on the day, eight of them were inside the Red Zone though he failed to punch one in for a score. The slow start to Fournette’s season is evident when seeing that Sunday’s Red Zone work is double his previous season total in the first three games. Jacksonville gets Carolina and a fairly soft rush defense in Week 5 so expect more work and Red Zone work for Fournette for the second week in a row.

Red Zone Receiving Targets

Gerald Everett , TE LAR – Everett asserted himself later in the year last year in the Rams offense when a couple of their top receiving threats were on IR. This past week though, he regained that form with three targets and two catches and a score as part of the 55-50 explosion that saw the Rams on the losing end to the Buccaneers. Everett is a guy with a bunch of talent at the tight end spot, however, there are just too many mouths to feed around him on a regular basis in Cooper Kupp , Brandin Cooks , Robert Woods , and even Todd Gurley out of the backfield. It will take the right match-ups and potentially a weapon in front of him to miss time before Everett consistently gets more looks.

Alshon Jeffery , WR PHI – Wentz needed someone to through all those pass attempts to and with Jeffrey coming back for the game, he was the top option on the receiving side of things. He saw four passes get tossed his way on Thursday but only managed to snag one for a catch though it did go for a score. Jeffrey when healthy, is unquestionably the top receiving target in Philly and that was the case once more in Week 4. Now he draws a match-up against the Jets and a suspect pass defense in Week 5 that should once more allow him and his fantasy owners to see him get more work near the goal line on a frequent basis.

Jimmy Graham , TE GB – With Rodgers putting up as many passing attempts as he did inside the 20, they had to go somewhere in the in the second part of the game, they were flying in Graham’s direction. He’s been a hard guy to figure out in Green Bay as earlier this season he seem to be losing favor with Rodgers after trying to nab a catch one-handed but in Week 4, he was the favorite target of number 12. Graham was targeted five times in the Red Zone and caught two of them including one for a 14-yard score. If Davante Adams doesn’t play in Week 5 against Dallas, it could be a fruitful week for Graham as Dallas gave up 11 catches for 116 yards and a score to Evan Engram in Week 1.

Davante Adams , WR GB – Adams was a stud for the first part of the game, until a toe injury forced him to the sideline for the remainder of the contest. Before leaving though, he racked up four targets and a catch in the Red Zone as part of the stellar effort. It’s clear that he’s the top target in Green Bay and with Rodgers continually trying to win the battle of throwing more, Adams may be getting utilized more like the WR1 he was drafted as in fantasy leagues, however that is dependent on how long he takes come back from the toe injury he was hobbled with in the second half. Once he’s back, expect him to keep getting the top looks in the Red Zone and all over the field really.

Red Zone Defense

Pittsburgh Steelers – There were questions earlier in the season about the Steelers defense, but they seem to be rounding into form, especially since acquiring Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Dolphins. On Monday Night Football they dispatched of the Bengals with ease and now have improved their Red Zone scoring percentage to 35.7-percent of the time allowing opponents to score touchdowns. The Steelers will have a challenge in Week 5 against the Ravens but if traditional game scripts play out, it should be a low scoring affair in which defense plays a major role.

Dallas Cowboys – The Cowboys haven’t exactly faced the toughest of competition to this point, facing the Giants, Redskins, Dolphins, and the Saints without Drew Brees . However, with that being said, the defense has still done their job and held opponents out of the endzone from inside the 20 at a pretty good clip. They’ve allowed 14 trips by opponents and only given up five touchdowns for a 35.7-percent conversion rate. It’s even better when you break it down and realize that only the Giants and Redskins have scored touchdowns from there as Miami and New Orleans were held out of the endzone even when they made it to the 20. They get the Packers in Week 5 at home, which is their stiffest test yet, if they hold up what they’ve been doing, it’ll be time to take them seriously going forward.
