Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports that the Athletics plan to drop Franklin Barreto and Seth Brown from their roster as they get down to 28 players.

Barreto is out of options, so he would have to clear waivers in order to remain in the organization. That likely wouldn't happen, and Lockard speculates that the 24-year-old will probably be traded. Barreto is a former top prospect, but he has really struggled in the majors to this point and has barely played this season. A change of scenery makes sense.

Michael Brantley (quad) will be back in the Astros' lineup Thursday as their designated hitter.

Manager Dusty Baker initially planned to rest Brantley for the duration of their series against the Diamondbacks, but he's changed his mind. Brantley has been dealing with a minor quad injury.

Yu Darvish limited the Royals to one run over seven innings in a victory Wednesday.

He was successful despite striking out just four, his low total in 19 starts since last June 10. Darvish was shaky in his summer-camp exhibition and in his season debut against the Brewers, but getting to face the Pirates and Royals lineups in his last two starts has allowed him to settle in nicely. Two gems in a row have him at 2-1 with a 2.12 ERA.

Jeremy Jeffress worked a perfect eighth for his third hold Wednesday against the Royals.

It looked like Rowan Wick was going to get the save chance for the Cubs tonight, but he took a seat after the team scored twice in the top of the ninth to make it a 6-1 game. Jeffress has closing experience and has been nearly perfect in pitching six hitless innings this season, but it seems the team is more comfortable with him setting up.

Austin Allen went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in a win over the Rangers on Wednesday.

Allen got the start on Wednesday, and the left-handed backstop obliterated an Ian Gibaut offering that gave the Athletics a 5-4 lead. He was enjoying a strong spring before the shutdown, and while this is Sean Murphy's job, he's an interesting DFS play when he faces a right-hander because of his easy plus power.

Ian Kennedy was charged with a pair of unearned runs while working in the eighth inning Wednesday against the Cubs.

Anyone holding on to Kennedy in fantasy leagues can go ahead and move on; the Royals don't have a closer and they're not going to have many leads anyway. One wonders why they didn't just put Kennedy back into the rotation if they weren't going to keep him in the closer's role. They've done a nice job of killing his trade value with this current tactic.

Ramon Laureano hit a solo homer and walked while going 1-for-3 in a win over the Rangers on Wednesday.

The Athletics hit four homers in this one, and Laureano's was a solo shot off of Kyle Gibson in the fifth inning. The underrated outfielder is off to a strong start in this shortened campaign; hitting .293 with three homers now and a .953 OPS. Many predicted a breakout season for Laureano before the COVID-19 shutdown, and while it'll be in a much small smaller sample, it certainly seems like he's on his way.

V. Caratini - C

Victor Caratini went 2-for-4 with an RBI against the Royals on Wednesday.

Caratini has gotten four starts at catcher and four at DH in the Cubs' first 12 games. He hasn't excelled, but 8-for-28 with a couple of extra-base hits isn't bad. As long as he keeps playing time much, he should have a lot to offer as a second catcher in two-catcher mixed leagues.
