Through Final Practice

This table is a new addition to the practice notes this season and hopefully it will help breakdown exactly where each driver fits in the practice speed listings. The drivers are in order of DK salaries and the columns mean the following: Prac to Qual is the difference between the Comb. Prac column and the Qualifying spot they have for the race. A positive number indicates they ran faster at average practice speed than where the qualified and should help show who has position differential upside and who may not. The Qual column is simply listing their qualifying spot for the race. The Comb. Prac column is an average of all of that driver's single lap speeds from practice. For example say Driver A registers 195 mph, 196 mph, 197 mph, and 198 mph in the four practices for a race, their Combination Practice speed would be 196.5 and then that speed is ranked amongst the other drivers to get the number you see in the column 1 is fastest and 40 is slowest. The others rank where that driver placed for that session and that session's 10-lap average where again 1 is fastest and 40 is slowest.

Best Lap Averages

Items of Note

  • Joey Logano is feeling good with his car but they are still working on a few things this session and expects to make three runs in this session.
  • Kevin Harvick is one of the Ford teams that swapped out hoods in order to make it beefier to prevent damage from spins that happen. He won’t run in this session.
  • The track temp was 60 degrees for the Duels and this session it’s nearly 100 which will make the cars handle differently and the track will be slicker.
  • Erik Jones feels that his car has good speed all weekend and can suck up to the pack pretty well. He feels it’s the best car he’s had at Daytona so far. He likely won’t be on track again this weekend until the race.
  • Kyle Busch thinks his car is good but wants a little more balance in the backend so he can drive up through the field on Sunday. He is also likely done for the weekend practice-wise.
  • Chip Ganassi Racing cars are doing single lap speeds to try and find the speed they need and it’s only going so-so as they try a change and then hit the track and then head back to the garage in repeat.
  • About halfway through practice several cars were making mock pit road runs to dial in the speeds and lights to avoid speeding penalties in the race
  • With 21 minutes left in the session, Kevin Harvick, Ross Chastain, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Erik Jones, B.J. McLeod, Cody Ware, and Parker Kligerman have yet to practice.
  • With 20 minutes left in the session, the Chevys are working on drafting together while the Toyotas are also working on drafting in a pack together.
  • Martin Truex Jr. likes what he feels in his car in the draft and that handling isn’t an issue. He is expecting to not bring the car out again this week.
  • William Byron is in the middle of the Chevy pack trying to figure out what his car will do in the draft since he’s the pole sitter and may not know right off what his car will do in the draft.
  • Ryan Preece says he is excited about his car but that they need to work on balance especially with the tires changing so much after 20-30 laps of race conditions.
  • Clint Bowyer says he wasn’t going to be able to stop Logano’s run last night in the Duels but still likes the car he has and thinks he’ll be fine for the race on Sunday.

With numerous cars taking the next two practices off this will be the only practice report for the weekend but on Saturday afternoon a final chart will be posted here to show practice speeds in the others for those that were on track.
