The run of short tracks continues this weekend as Richmond Raceway, and its three-quarter-mile surface, plays host for the Toyota Owners 400. It is the longest of the short tracks on the NASCAR Cup schedule but it still drives, in some respects, like the other flat, shorter tracks like Martinsville, New Hampshire, and Phoenix. The D-shape of the track is like a shrunken down Auto Club or Michigan but far, far, flatter of a surface with banking at just 14 degrees in the corners.

Richmond, or “The Action Track” as it’s known, is a track that races completely differently in the day than it does at night. During the day, the track is slicker with less grip and typically is more of a multi-groove surface compared to night races here. The package on the cars this week is the 750-horsepower, low-downforce package that we’ve previously seen at Martinsville, Phoenix, and the Daytona Road Course this year.

With there being 400 laps in the race, laps led will be a key stat to target in builds and in the last five races at this track there has been at least one driver to lead 100 or more laps per race and in two there were two drivers to achieve the feat. In each of those races, there was at least another couple of drivers to lead at least 50 laps as well. One interesting part of this track is that in the last four races here, no more than 16 drivers have finished on the lead lap by the end of the race which does limit some driver’s position differential as getting lapped, caps how far up in the field a driver can go.

Average Points By Starting Spots

These charts are based on points scored for each site over the last four races strictly based on starting spots regardless of the driver starting in that spot. They are mainly an idea for strategy and not hard and fast rules to build by.
