10-Team Leagues

Brandon Woodruff , SP MIL – One of the hotter pitchers in baseball right now, Woodruff’s ownership in standard leagues is approaching 70-percent which makes him more likely as an available streaming option in 10-team leagues for the upcoming week. Already posting impressive numbers on the season, going 6-1 with a 3.51 ERA while striking out 10.26/9. Since April 27th he hasn’t allowed more than one earned run just once and that was a game in which he allowed two runs over eight innings. This recent string stretches over his last five starts. As I am writing this he has tossed four shutout innings against the Phillies so that streak is well on it’s way to six starts. This upcoming week he will draw a road match up against a Pirates lineup that ranks 21st in wOBA and 27th in ISO against right-handed pitching this season.

Mike Soroka , SP ATL - Fire it up! Sitting at 80-percent ownership in standard leagues it’s likely that Soroka could be floating around your 10-team waiver wire and I have absolutely no idea why that would be to be honest. The kid has been utterly dominant with the only stat that doesn’t jump off the page being his strikeout numbers which are still good just not elite. He’s 5-1 with a 1.07 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP while striking out 46 over 50.2 innings.  He has a home start against an American League team this week which is already a good sign as the team will lose their DH but also that team is the Detroit Tigers.  The Tigers have one of the worst offenses in baseball this season, ranking 29th in wOBA, 28th in ISO and have the 3rd worst strikeout rate at 26.1-percent against RHP on the year.

12-Team Leagues

Lucas Giolito , SP CHI – OK fine, you win…I am buying in on Giolito. How can we not? If we thought what he was doing was a bit fluky the litmus test would have been his start against the top offense in baseball in the Houston Astros and all he did was go and toss a complete game shutout while striking out nine IN HOUSTON. He is now 6-1 with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP while having struck out 59 over 52 innings.  He has two starts this week, both at home, with the first coming against the Royals and the second coming against the Indians. The Royals will pose the tougher test of the two but seeing how well he is pitching he is a must add not just for this week but maybe ROS as well.

Brad Peacock , SP HOU – His ownership is approaching 50-percent in standard leagues and this is yet another pitcher that I feel like everybody is just late to the party to. He offers tremendous strikeout upside with the leagues best offense behind him for run support.  Over his last his last four starts he has allowed a total of one earned run over 23 innings while striking out 32 batters. He tossed a six-inning shutout against the Red Sox in his most recent outing. His start this upcoming week will be in Oakland, a pitcher friendly park, against an offense that just put Khris Davis on the IL.

Rich Hill , SP LAD – It’s a reach given the ownership which is approaching 70-percent in standard leagues but if you find yourself on the wire and see that Hill is available then you should look to swipe him up. As long as he is healthy the man can dominate opposing lineups and rack up the strikeouts. He has two starts this week, the first coming against the Mets and the second coming against the Phillies. Hill has been impressive over his last two outings, allowing just one run while striking out 17 over 12 innings.

15-Team Leagues

Daniel Norris , SP DET – He made the article last week and that paid off as he allowed two runs over six innings while striking out five against the Marlins. This week he has an even easier matchup as he faces the Baltimore Orioles who will be coming back from playing in Coors Field this weekend. Baltimore’s offense has not been good for most of this season and against southpaws they rank 20th in wOBA and ISO while striking out 26.5-percent of their at bats against left-handed pitching.

Félix Peña , SP LAA – The Angels have gone back and forth with using Pena as the starter and as the primary long reliever after using an opener. As of now it has been reported that he will be the primary starter against the Athletics on Monday.  Pena has ben really solid this season when on the mound, posting a 3.30 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP while striking out 40 over 43.2 innings. With him starting he will have added value for those in leagues that count quality starts as a category.
